Belt and alternator replacement

I recently removed and replaced my alternators voltage regulator. I now need a diagram of the serpentine belt and its route since I lost my phone with all the snap shots of how I removed everything. It's for a 2005 4.4i.

All other pics of 3.0's or earlier X5 models I've searched here seem to have a pully attached to the alternator in a different position than mine.

I beleive I have placed it in its correct locations and path but It's so tight I can not get the tension pully back in to its slot to tighten and lock in its position.

.....Also ater I re-installed the alternator I am having trouble inserting the bottom (longer) bolt to catch the thread at the end. The bolt is 3/4 of the way in but cant catch the thread. The top shorter bolt is fully inserted.

I would greatly apreciate any help.

Thanks!

Thanks amacman. That helps a lot. It looks like I routed the belt properly but can not get the upper tensioner back in its slot.

Now that I know it's correct I will try again the day after tomorrow when its not raining.

I'm trying to the same job, I wonder how you get to the alternator, from the top or bottom? I am trying from the top, I tried to wiggle the alternator and I can see it's moving, but it won't get out. Hope you are still around here.

Sorry, it's a 2006 X5 4.4i.

I am working from the top, this thread suggests maybe I should work from the bottom http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...er-cooled.html

I took the picture by placing the camera directly in front of it. I already have both bolts (3 and 4) out from the alternator. I tried to wiggle it, I know it's moving but it won't come out. from the picture, there seems to be two bolts (maybe more) holding a metal piece that presses against the alternator that keeps it from moving. I feel that if I took out bolt 1, I could swing the metal piece upward and it would be out of the way, then it would be easier to get the alternator out by turning it counter-clock wise. Am I wrong?

From this picture, I really can't imagine what's holding this heavy item in place, after removing 2 bolts.

I crawled underneath the car, it seems that the bottom of the alternator is all clear, there are 2 or three hoses I can remove but that does not give me more room to work on the alternator as there are several metal frames directly under the alternator, with big bolts in them that I really don't want to touch. Any help?
