Winter Tires on 20" rims - yes 275/40/20's fit on rear rims!
I had a beat up set of 20" chrome 87's and decided to use them for the winter. I found a set of (4) 275/40/20 Pirelli Scorpions off a Range Rover practically new for $400 for all (4)! I made sure the specs showed the 275/40/20 would fit on a 10.5" rim. Sure enough it shows it will fit from 9-11" rim. Bought the tires, brought them to the tire shop, they complained that the tires shouldn't go on that big of rim so I showed them the spec and $100 later they were mounted and balanced. The pics attached show the result for those interested in seeing what they look like on the rim. Hope this helps some folks out when purchasing winter tires and saving some $$'s in the process.

While they may be mountable, in your second picture you can see that the tire is too narrow for the rim. The tire will not provide any curb protection. Might not be important if your rims are already beaten up, but others may want to provide more protection for their rims.

Seeing that you are located in Canada I believe you already know that 275 tires are not good in winter. The wider the worse. That said I have to mount my (I hate them) 235 here in the Alps. Reason: they work on snow and ice which we have plenty of. Good luck. |

Ya I know the wider the worse it gets. Still better than 315's though ! I was thinking on purchasing 19's for the winter but like I said, already had beater rims so much cheaper doing it this way. JCL, I agree, by mounting the 275 on the 10.5" rim it does take away the protection but if you are going to drive in the winter then best to put crappy rims on anyway and not worry about hitting the curbs (hard not to hit curbs if you get a lot of snow).

Of course I am happy to post how it looks like here. This picture is from yesterday about 10km from where I am living, taken during a mountain tour. You see - snow is slowly coming....... My winter tires are 235/55 17 and to be honest they are too wide for my feeling. But unfortunately it seems that this is the narrowest tire which is allowed on the X. All the best. |

where I live we usually start getting it around late nov and runs through until March/April. In bad years we will accumulate 2-3 feet of snow. I can only imagine you get much more that that in your area, correct?
