You can get factory piano black trim instead of the wood trim. My X came with the factory piano black trim. It's twelves years old and there are no cracks on it.

*Update*

Just purchased a complete OEM black trim kit from eBay and installed it. The trim I purchased is not piano black, it is COSMOSCHWARZ. I think there may have been two different black trims that were available for the E53. It has silver metal flake in it and looks completely awesome against the flat black of the leather interior.

Since I started this thread I figured I'd update it with some pics for reference. I added the pics to the "What did you do to / for your E53 today??" thread already.

looks awesome, I just got quoted 375-450 to do all my interior trim with 3m 1080 scotchprint vinyl, and like some other posters said, its not even guaranteed that after a few years it wont start coming away at the corners and what not.

Painting is a great option, everything i paint always comes out chipping though, so i wonder if i could paint myself.

Thanks Ricky. The price is not bad considering the material and the labor but to me you can do this on your own. The truth about vinyl is that it shrinks and expands. In the northeast with our weather you will notice it after a few years. The edges or corners will move a bit. The 3M vinyl is more resistant than standard decal because of its thickness.

Painting to me is the best lasting, assuming you take care of your car. Some people bang up there daily drivers so I don't blame them for not wanting to put nice stuff inside. The painted stuff just needs a proper primer with a few coats of paint and plenty of coats of clear. The clear at the end matters.

On a scale from 1 (my girlfriend) to 10 (my mechanic)... how difficult is it to remove all of these trim pieces?

I was never very good at these smaller jobs, just don't seem to have that magic "touch" with interior panels.

everything is fairly straightforward but the center console trim.

write up on the tips and tricks page but basically the console has to come out to get the trim out of there.

Everything (but the center console) is REALLY EASY. Just use a plastic pry tool and start at a corner, a little force and they start coming right out. I did not remove the center console but the entire assembly needs to come out in order to remove the wood part. That looks fairly intense, I wish I could tell you but I didn't take it out myself.
