Comprehensive coverage (or 'comp') is not that expensive. That's the part of your auto insurance that covers fire, theft, flood damage, vandalism, etc.

Second, we had plenty of warning for this hurricane. Why didn't you take your X5 and bike to higher ground??? There's not much you can do if a tree falls on your car, but to park a car in a flood prone area does not make sense to me; especially an uninsured car.
Not to piss on the OP's already bad month, but I'm with Skyline on this one. I have comprehensive insurance from Progressive on my E46 track car and it costs me ... $17/month. That's not a typo. Yeah, the insurance won't cover the track components, but it will cover the OEM parts. An X5 couldn't possibly more too much more expensive than that. Maybe $25/month?

Anyhow, best of luck getting your stuff sorted, OP. Hopefully you can get a hand from FEMA. On the bright side, at least you've got yourself a good ol' reliable Honda. Best wishes.

Just liablity. And the minimum required for liablity is SO much lower than what any sensible person in our litigious society should carry.

OK, I saw this coming.
1. my truck is parked indoors most of time.
2. i do not live in a flood zone area. my area was not expected to flood.
3. i only have a little over 50k on my truck. needless to say its parked most of the time. All summer I ride my motor bike.
4. Hurricane Sandy is the first of its kind in OVER 100 YEARS, so unless you were living in the 18th century no one expected something like this.
5. I am a firm believer in not wasting time and money, so for those who believe in paying a load of $ in insurance for a vehicle that is rearly ever used ---- I will not.
I have to admit that i had full coverage on it until june and took it off because it was going to be parked up for an extended period and to not have to turn in my plates i have to keep insurance on it. So to those who dont know me, my situation, my business, and think that now is a good opportunity to exercise their ability to try and belittle and show how smart or stupid or ignorant they are, let me say (when the right shoe is on the left foot) then you'll understand.
If you dont get it at different levels i hope you get it at ONE

I have an X5 that is dead due to epic engine failure, and that car is not going anywhere, it is parked in the driveway - I have it insured only for the COMPREHENSIVE coverage, in case if the tree falls, or if someone takes a key to it... not sure, if the flood is covered though...

I had E39 parked for about 3 years, while we were overseas, i had the car insured for the same comprehensive... it is only a few bucks a year

Hey, man.

Like I said, I wasn't trying to piss on you or your UTTERLY UNFORTUNATE situation. I was simply agreeing with Skyline that comprehensive insurance isn't that much considering your car could always get stolen from anywhere. But I digress. Like I said, I was just agreeing on the objective fact and was not trying to take a stab at you in any way whatsoever.

I think I speak on behalf of the great majority of members here when I say that I feel for you and wish you the very best.

Now, just a quick option you might consider. You could always strip the shell, rinse and clean everything off with water and then sell off those parts. You could make back several thousand dollars that way instead of selling the thing for scrap. Just a suggestion.
