When I use the floor jack, I go 'off' the diff to one side on the rear susp A arm, and use an old knarly piece of plywood for a 'protective' and broad lift point, there. Never had a problem, and I can crank it high enough, even 'off center line' to get both rear wheel/tires off.

I thought I had bookmarked some posts on the topic, but all I found was this pic done by someone else; they are using the rear diff, though not on the finned aluminunm piece, fwiw.

BMW service instructions say to lift on the differential, but not on the finned cover, as MD mentions.

There are threads discussing it, with a copy of the BMW instruction.
