Rear wiper not working

I have had my 2001 4.4i sport since July, and th e rear wiper has never worked. Living in NW Oregon, it is really needed. I have removed the motor assembly and checked the circuit board, and it looks fine. I have power to the assembly. Nothing happens when I activate the switch, and the rear washer doesn't work either. The fuse is fine. Has anyone else had similar conditions, and solved this? thanks!

Have you checked the spindle where the wiper arm is screwed to it? I ask in case the nut (#4 in diagram below) is allowing it to turn...and the spindle is slipping & the arm isn't moving.

When you try to "wash" the rear window...can you hear the pump's motor activate? If not, check to see if it's burnt out etc.

Spindle nut is tight. The motor just doesn't run. I can't hear the pump run either. Will a burned out pump disable the wiper?

Isn't there a relay somewhere? Also could be the stalk.

From what I have been able to find, there doesn't appear to be a relay. I'm just trying to rule out everything else before replacing the stalk.

weird accidental result today. When I was changing out the VC gaskets, I removed the washr tank for clearance. When I put it back together I accidentally swapped the wires for the front and rear pumps. Turns out that the rear pump works! It sprayed water all over my rear window when I tried to wash the windshield this morning. Does this give anyone clues as to where I should look next?

Mine has the same issue; 2001, rear wiper doesn't work, but the washer does. It would be nice to have it working, but it's not so pressing that I've invested any time to figure it out. So I'll just lurk & see what comes of your thread.

I finally found the problem and fixed it last night. three of the wires passing through the rubber boot between the body and hatch on the right side had broken. Now it works like new!

Uh oh! Looks like the e53 suffers from a common e39 malady. Will have to add this tidbit to my "mental rolodex"

The wires in the loom that goes from the e39's trunk/boot into the body of the car, can break or chafe over time and cause lots of electrical issues/gremlins with the systems that are associated with any of the wires that may be damaged.

Below are some examples of the e39's wiring loom that has broken and chafed wires:
