By 6 I'm referring to the inline 6 that was also in the X5. BMW never came out with a V6. I would still run a car fax to see if perhaps the car was in an accident and had front end work done on it.

how about you tell us what part numbers you ordered, and what part numbers were re-ordered, and what part number was on the original fan clutch?

You were not ripped off. Your previous owner may have installed or paid another shop to replace the fan clutch. The previous owner may have purchased a used fan clutch with fan on the internet, local sale, or ebay, junk yark, whatever.. Or the shop he used installed the wrong fan clutch/fan, or had a E38 fan clutch on the shelf, and couldnt sell it, so he used in on the car. I dont understand how this would even been remotely considered as being ripped off, as you did not pay them, or the owner to do this, because you purchased the vehicle as-is most likely. What you need to do is replace the fan blade and fan clutch because you had the incorrect ones installed.

you bought it and owned it for 2years and you never noticed it was an inline 6 instead of a V8 the old man pulling a fast one on you reminds me of the scene in dumb and dumber where the old lady takes all of Lloyd's stuff from him

how is a carfax going to tell you if the motor was replaced? Carfax will not have a complete record of every single repair. Having a motor replaced is not being ripped off. Telling you that the motor is original, and never been replaced is also not considered being ripped off. You have nothing that proves any of this at all. Why dont you get the serial number off the engine, and I can tell you if its the original one that came with the car.

He has a V8, not the in line 6. Since BMW is very good at putting Vehicle Identification label all over the car, I would think that you could get the serial number off the engine and ask BMW what car was the engine installed in.
