Do you have soft close on your upper hatch. Call them back and tell them to pull relay for the lift gate. It's in the trunk fuse location. This fixed it for me. Free fix.

Here's an assist to Slicks reply above...you can see the location of the relay:

Hmm strange, that pic is missing a bunch of relays. My car has all of them filled. 6 relays I believe. I was almost sure the right most, empty stop in that pic is the soft close relay.

Thanks for all the help guys! really appreciate it

The garage switched the lock yesterday already, so everything is good now. Looking at part #15, its around $300ish for the part plus another $100 something for another part (part of #15). So I guess getting charged $600 wasn't too farfetched considering they got the part from the dealer.

The image belongs to Powers1 who is one of the long time members that doesn't have any model/model year/build date info listed or a signature with any vehicle info...so it's difficult to say why his rear fuse/relay box is configured that way.

His location is listed as UK...so since they can order ala carte from the option menu...it looks like the electrically adjustable & heated rear seats options weren't installed. Plus there may be some differences if his X is RHD, too.

Still, the detailed image of the rear fuse/relay configuration is much appreciated...especially to e53 noobs like myself.

I can tell you that when mine died, I opened the back, went to close it and nothing. it wouldn't lock at all. I tried all kinds of thing to get it to work again. I had to replace it.

It's one of those " now it works, now it doesn't"

Yep, that is what the garage told me today. They couldn't close it at all.

The new lock is amazing. It's so quiet! when I open the trunk, I don't have to wait for the unlock, it opens instantly like it was never latched. Closing, it sounds completely different than before. (sounds more solid? like a thud on the newer e70s) also you don't hear those mechanic sounds of the lock right after it latches. I am quite happy with the new lock despite the rather steep price. $630 cdn

Mine did the same as yours. Couldn't close it. Was a jammed relay. I even had a spare one just in case.
