Why is everyone writing upside down?
A little advice, do it ALL yourself! Go to your indy and give someone $20 to crack the clutch fan loose. It will tighten a bit when you're driving but you should be able to spin it off once you get home. I did this all on my E46 and it wasn't nearly as hard as everyone made it seem. If you do the oil filter housing gasket you have a LOT more room to deal with the CCV and it makes it substantially easier. If you have all the parts you could knock this out in 5-6 hours which may seem like a lot but time flies when you're working on your own car with some good music. It's also pretty nice to get in there and clean everything up a bit. I say tackle it yourself and you'll save a LOT of money and learn a ton about your car. |

Thanks. sorry us russians had a little reunion...
and they all basically recommended I do the repairs on my own as long as I don't do a half-assed job. I will try the mallet swing attempt. If not I will bring it to a shop to loosen it.

I recommended that you not do it yourself, actually.
![]() Some people should do DIY repairs, others shouldn't. It isn't in any way a judgement on the individual. It depends on the training, mechanical aptitude, availability of a place to do the work, availability of tools, etc. Posters that have all of those are already doing repairs themselves. Those that don't have those things shouldn't necessarily take a DIY approach. Especially if they have tried and caused themselves some problems. At the very least, they should consider getting a friend to DIY, and help them out by passing tools. Many times people who ask on various boards about shop repairs get told to do it themselves. That is often wrong, IMO. There is nothing better for increased shop revenues than a DIYer who tried first and wasn't successful. Just my $0.02

I will have to agree with JCL on this. DYI is a good way to learn and get your hand dirty but you have to choose the type of work you start with. OP i don't know what your technical capability is but I personally think oil filter housing gasket and CCV is very time consuming and not something I would recommend for someone who's technical capability stops at changing tires (again i'm not saying that's all you are capable of doing). I recently went through the same dilemma, i've done brakes, valve cover gasket, door carrier, expansion tank etc.. these are all simple. I have also helped a friend change the CCV on his 530 so i'm well aware of the type of work involved. Considering that the X5 is my wife's daily and needs it for work everyday, I didn't want to gamble taking it apart and not being able to finish the job that weekend for whatever reason (wrong part number, broken bolt, etc..) So i choose to take it to the Indy and have him do it (sucks having to pay the price i paid) but safer than wife missing couple of days of work. So if this is your daily driver, think twice before you tackle the project, make sure you have a back-up plan in case you don't finish it in time for use the following day or two. Good luck..
