Congratulations and Welcome. Great X. Just my 2 cents on the gearbox, I agree w/JCL, don't touch it if it hasn't had any service and is shifting fine.

I am confused as to what to do now. I have a 2001 with 104,000 miles on it and it just started slipping. I bought it used with 80,000. I did a valve cover gasket job the other day and when I was putting the right side cover on a (breather?) hose snapped that came from the LH driver's side. Now what? I just ordered a new gasket with filter and was going to drain and fill. Please help!!!!

Do you know that it is slipping? Are you able to tell, or is it a guess?

Is it any different in regular mode, sport mode (automatic) or manual mode?

If you narrow it down, and it appears you have an internal transmission problem, then you can always decide to change the fluid and see if it helps. It may do so. Don't count on it, but it is cheaper as a first step than tearing open the transmission.

You appear to be connecting the transmission drain question with your breaking the hose when you tried to change the valve cover gaskets. One issue at a time. Fix the valve cover gasket, make sure all the vacuum hoses are connected, and then move on to the transmission issue.

I know the tranny is slipping. It is just weird when it happened after the hose broke off. I haven't tried it in manual yet..... I will today. Valve cover gaskets are fixed though. I found out that it was a Final drive front axle ventilation tube. I hope the axle is stuttering because of this and NOT the transmission.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it. I am going to do a partial change, dropping the pan and replacing the filter with the correct fluid and filter. I hope this helps. I will let you guys know the outcome either way. I figure a $150 band aid is worth a try when we are talking about a $5,000 replacement.

I did the transmission fluid change 5.5 quarts Pentosin, and the slipping went away! The magnets were covered in muck. I am so happy it was an easy fix. Lifetime fluid my ass!

Have 110k on 4.6 with Dinan engine and transmission mods that I drive very hard. I added 150 shot of nitrous 5k ago--all is well. Have changed transmission oil and filter with OEM products at every 40k. It was the recommendation of a BMW shop the is highly regarded for service of daily drivers and an extensive high performance and racing clientele.
