2000-2003 ..you can play and easily mod those headlights as they come apart easily....as with 2004-2006..they are a little bit hard..but X5snd made his happen changing his AE's to a brighter LED ones.....

Not so much interested in projector in the "highbeam" spot,

More interested why they would get rid of projector fogs... I guess i can always do mine in the future, good retrofit projectors for the fogs is like $100 and fogs shouldnt be too hard to mod.

Thats really one of my petpeeves is they do something good and take it away, it might be minor but i really notice and like the little stuff.
Are you talking about the inner projector on mrbmwx5 headlights? that is his custom work he made a custom high beam.

If you refer to the lower fog light housings, yes up until 2002 all X5's came with projector fog light housings taking an H3 bulb. 2003 (mine did) and above including facelift models have reflector fog light housing taking H11 bulb.

I'd like to retrofit projector fog light housings down the line when I get the money to do so, I had projector fogs on my VW and loved that my D2S/fogs were projector housings, nothing but clean sharp cutoff of light!

Don't know why they got rid of them, but yes tmv has a 2001 so he has the old projector fog lights, you can find them on ebay for about 130 for the pair of factory housings.

However you could always take your stock ones and do a Morimoto mini or similar retrofit
