Rotational scraping noise from front end
i guess i'll pull the wheels off again this weekend and see if i can track down the noise. just hoping someone might be able to chime in and let me know what else might be causing a noise like this so i can check all possibilities. thanks! (i realize this is difficult to diagnose without actually hearing it, but just looking for possible causes.)

There should be a round metal plate behind the rotor. I can't think of the name now. Check to make sure that's not touching the rotor. It might have bent when you removed the wheels. Happened to me before.

Ive had a noise like this for a while, its between 10-30mph, cant figure it out. Some have said carrier bearing, but when my car is on the lift it doesnt make the noise, and carrier bearing is silent. Frustrated.

I would say the hound has the fox in sight. The dust plate behind the rotor is most likely bent, doesn't have to be loose to rub. Likely at the top or bottom, may be able to see a shiny spot before you remove the wheel. It likely comes when the suspension is loaded on that side and goes when traveling strait. If you remove the wheels again wire brush the hubs and apply a little anti-seeze.

xsx450,
If carrier bearing you should feel vibration when de-accelerating and/or noise under your feet that doesn't go away. Check to see if it is in a particular gear or only when you at constant speed, when slowing down or speeding up. How many miles?

Its very faint and no vibration at all. only between 10-30mph. So faint the mechanics cannot even hear it. lol! I would say its more of a stone grinding/sliding sounds, not metallic scrape... really hard to describe... 73k, California Car.

Since it started just after you had the wheels off and you were using a hammer in the process, the cheapest, easiest and most likely cause is the metal behind the rotor is bent and is touching the rotor. That would be the first step I would take. We can go from there if that is not the cause. What did you do that you had to remove the wheels?

xsx450,
How many miles did it have on it when you bought it? Has the sound changed or become louder? Any mods on the X at time of purchase?
