Temp gauge to red quckly, then back to normal

Hey fellow XOutposters!

I have an issue that is driving me nuts. 2006 X5 3.0i 6MT, engine tune, headers/exhaust.

Since applying an OETune over the latest firmware update for my DME, I’m encountering an issue that I cant seem to solve. Once the engine is fully warm and driving down the highway at 70 to 75 MPH, occasionally the temperature gage will move very quickly into the full red zone, sit there for about five seconds, then come back to normal. Occasionally (not always) it will trigger the service engine soon light, and throw a P0117 or a P0118 code. After logging the situation through the OBDII port, the engine temperature never waivers off of 95°C. Both the engine temperature sensor and the thermostat have been replaced very recently. The electric fan is operating properly. This past week I had my Indie shop (Moonlite Motorwerks, these guys rock) verify the software version as there was a TRB against this issue way back in 2006. The firmware version is the latest available.

I can only think there is something in the OE tune package that is causing this issue. Since the truck is not overheating, it’s not a big deal – but where I live in New Jersey this issue is occasionaly triggering the readiness test to “not ready “.

Next step is to remove the tune and see if the issue disappears. If so then I need to go back to the OETune folks to see if they are aware of such an issue.

Has anybody out there experienced this temp gauge going quickly to red and then returning to normal within a few seconds?

Sounds like it is in the tune, I’ve never experienced it, nor do I use OETune, but it almost seems like something is “resetting” and causing the instrument cluster to “recheck” itself, almost like on initial start. I think I would definitely pull the tune and double check that, just to be safe.

I don't know anything about the tune, but I like the idea of reverting back to the factory tune (updated) and see what happens.

Not sure how you logged it (OBDFusion?) but was anything else amiss when you hit the red? I am not sure what I would look for, but just a thought.

Yes, I used OBDFusion. Trapped the logs and freeze frame when the P00117/P0118 triggered the CEL. No evidence of anything unusual, engine temps never waivered, other parameters were in range and nothing unusual stood out to me.

The tune will need to come off and see if that solves the issue. Thanks for the input guys!

My stock X5 hit this issue years ago. Dealer replaced the thermostat under warranty. I see you already replaced it so it could be the tune.

A little more info on this issue... weather has been great here in the NE this weekend, so I decided to drop all the windows on 40 mile highway run and use natural AC. Typically this issue occurs at least once on this same highway stretch I frequently drive - with the AC on.

So today, with no AC on —> no temp gauge to red and back issue. Hmmm...

And yet a little more info, no clue if it is related. On cold startup, the AC compressor will not provide for cold air until I start driving (needs some higher RPMs to generate pressure, no doubt it is starting fail). Tried MAX setting, no different. Aux fan does not spin on MAX setting until engine is at operating temp. AC will blow very cold air once moving (just had the AC charge topped off). Under warm start conditions (truck not sitting overnight), the AC works fine, almost immediate cold air.

Could the AC compressor in some way be triggering, during highway driving conditions, the temp guage issue???

I would look at the wiring to the engine temperature sensor as well as the engine coolant temperature sensor. You may have a short.

The AC issue is most likely your variable displacement compressor is not compressing the refrigerant to provide the necessary pressure for cooling to occur. Running the engine at high RPM normally will kick start a variable compressor into action.
