Hard downshift 2nd to 1st when stopping

What the title says, when I am stopping, as the car speed approaches zero, some times it downshifts hard to the 1st gear, unless I am braking a lot. I like to gently cruise to a stop and slightly releasing my brakes just as the car comes to a halt, but if I do it that the car jerks forward.

I read somewhere that perhaps the gearbox software needs to be upgraded. Is that true?

Thanks for your help.

Gearbox software upgrade is something worth doing for sure.

But I did this 30 days ago and its still working for me. I will go get Engine and Gearbox Software updates soon though.

Use 30 secs reset method. It will solve the problem.
-Turn key to position 2. But dont start the engine.
-Floor the gas pedal for 30-40 secs.
-Release the gas pedal, step on brake and start the engine.
-Drive FORWARD (Not reverse, so make sure you are out of your garage before you attempt to do the transmission reset)

This is a temporary solution.

OK, one more question, if you do not mind.

I am waiting for the romanian cable and software to arrive, so I was wondering if the transmission software upgrade can be done by me (perhaps by downloading the software from a BMW site), or I have to take the car to the dearership.

Skip the dealership every time. Find a repair shop that focuses on BMWs and see if they can do the software. It should only be about $100.

I have the ability to do it myself but I don't want to install the wrong tranny software and mess things up.

Great advise BavariaTexan, only Greece is not US. Finding an independent shop that knows such things is not that easy.

Well there's that. There are some places you can find Transmission software. Good luck with that.

Did you attempt the gas pedal reset?

I have the same problem when I start my X5 and attempt to drive right off.. For the first 1-2 minutes of the drive it will have a hard downshift into 1st from 2nd gear.. Especially when slowing down.. But if i turn on my car - and let it warm up for 2-3 minutes - then start to drive off - the problem is not there.... I am most sure i have to get the software update as well I Know it has something to do with the trans warmup protocol

Yes, I did, but didn't drive much after that. It definitely behaved differently when coming to a stop. Thanks for that, much appreciated!
