Did a customers ,2002 x5 recently and like you,I also measured around 77mm ,so I bought the 74mm available instead of the 82mm!WRONG!..It caught me out too..
When you the buy the badge ,including the bit with 2 pins, where the emblem sticks too,it does measure 82mm ,but they come separated and what you do is just use the carbon sticker and this measures the 77mm
Hope this is useful for those who havent done it ,yet
Oh,sod it,may as well ,tell all!To remove the front emblem ,you need to simply push the tips up,from the inside of the bonnet, while the on the rear emblem ,you will only need to replave the sticker. To pull out sticker, heat it up a bit with a hairdrier (no heat hgun!!!!!) and use a credit card on the edges to pull it out (no screwdriver!!!)

The wrong size 74mm ,I got from China ,but the 82mm I got from this nice UK seller, where I also bought the wheel caps.

Hi Powers1

I removed the badge first off the back (the part inc the pins) and it measured 77mm in total diameter

I've just done the wheels tonight and they came separate the centre caps and the bmw badge had to be stuck on first

So you bought a 82mm badge ?

Did it come separate and you just used the "sticker" to fit to your over original badge

regards

How was your centre caps installation?I bought the caps from same seller as the 82mm emblem and I found when "punched" into the centre of the wheel, they bulge out a little ,making the sticker separate from the edges, but dont think they fall off.
My badges already came stuck on the cap and I removed one and it didnt fit the OEM cap

I bought these : item 280871438729 off ebay and they came separate so I had to stick the "sticker" on

They fit perfect and look the bollocks (just had wheels powder coated satin black so complement the wheels perfectly)

just waiting for a reply on the steering wheel badge

If you look up the correct 11 digit BMW part nbr first, then shop using that nbr, you cut down the risk of buying the wrong part.

Lots of vendors list the incorrect size & sometimes even list the wrong models...especially if they aren't that familiar with some simple differences between the generations of 3/5/6/7/8/x/z that can range over multiple decades. The correct part nbr is more consistent than size or model indication.

Problem is ,if you search an aftermarket accessory by the OE part number, you will also limit your search as its obviously a non OE product
