After installation the CEL no longer illuminated and all appeared to be fine. That's when the hesitation started when pulling away from a stop. One time when it occurred I was pulling across two lanes of oncoming traffic. I stopped by my mechanic and he loaned me a brand new, BMW MAF to test out for a couple of weeks. With no further issues I called him up, gave him my CC information, and that laid to rest my X5 MAF issue. So what was the problem with the aftermarket MAF? I have no idea. Aside from the sporadic hesitation from a stop there were no other symptoms. No codes, no CEL. Take this for what it's worth. |

Since the engine was down 4 quarts of oil
I think that you have an intake vacuum leak. It could be the DISA valve at the intake manifold. You have the P0171, P0174 which point to lean condition on both banks. Hopefully the DISA valve pin didn't come off and is now bouncing around the engine. There's a youtube video on removing the DISA Valve. I have a good use DISA Valve ($40 plus shipping). The sealing ring has been replace with a new o-ring.
That was my problem and I'm very anal when it come to the truck so even though the new o-ring fixed the problem I still ordered and installed a new OEM DISA Valve. As for the p0732 code: DTC FAULT DESCRIPTION OBD II MONITORING CONDITIONS CHECK TRANS. LIMP POSSIBLE CAUSES ENG. MIL MIL HOME P0732 Slip detected – Second gear Drive vehicle so that transmission shifts 2 √ √ Transmission oil level low through all forward gears; Output speed sensor problem (Refer to P0721 repeat several times and P0722 Possible Causes) Engine speed signal circuit between ECM and TCM: open circuit, short circuit, or high resistance Transmission mechanical failure

The pin is located at the top of the flap and secure the top of the flap to the DISA Valve. The flap should pivot, but should not be loose.

http://i.imgur.com/IKk40XF.jpg When I first pulled out the DISA, this is what it looked like, loose at the end. http://i.imgur.com/eGKgd11.jpg Another pic. http://i.imgur.com/dk8aCDU.jpg It is wobbly and it looks chipped at the corner. http://i.imgur.com/D7S1S81.jpg I didn't notice, but when we cleaned the inside of where the DISA with a towel, the towel had something stuck to it. When I grabbed the towel today, I noticed this sucker, the pin on it. I'm guessing the DISA is broken if the pin just falls out like this. Am I correct in thinking I need a new DISA?

Consider yourself a lucky man. Had that pin been sucked into the engine you will be looking at a total engine rebuild.
An E46 owner on another forum had the pin come off and unlike you the pin got sucked into the engine. He only had the car for 4 months and had to park it until he saved enough money to get the engine rebuilt.

If you need to use your truck, you may be able to reinsert the pin and use a drop of super glue to hold the pin in the flap, but I would replace the DISA valve as soon as possible and not consider that a permanent fix.
