Here's a video on installing a hitch for a 2003, they didn't have a video for a 2004, but it should be similar. Etrailer has two hitches available for the X5 E53. A Drawtite and Curt. The Drawtite has a higher rating and I would buy that if I was installing a hitch.

I have purchase items from etrailer and has been very satisfied with the products they sell and the service they provide. Shipping is extremely quick.

Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for BMW X5 2004 - 75492

I would get that OEM e-bay trailer hitch, then add the electrical harness component that's missing. TerminatorX5 posted that harness link as well, so harnesses can be had. Another option to explore is this here.
P.S: And, yes, Bingo: there are a few for sale. Can't post the link with the results, because the URL won't work, but you have to do the search.

Hmm, looks like that trailer module is around a $200 item, which makes that a very pricey used hitch. I'll follow up with the seller and see if it just isn't pictured.

This might be the ticket- looks like there are plenty available at junkyards. I wonder how hard it'd be to pull one of these off that's already installed.

i'd get the one from the craigslist, and put a watch onto the ebay for the part # 61356955253 - i am sure it will pop up for much much less than the $200... check with the Latvian breakers, they have things all the times - worst case scenario, you will get a Euro version module that has more functions, like the trailer fog lights... lol..

I installed a DrawTite Hitch several years ago and was very pleased. I did a write up on how to install but not sure if it is still in this forum.

For the OP, if you want more info on the DrawTite, I might have instructions on my office pc. Send me a message here or search the forums for one of my old posts cuz it might still be there. Been really busy so have not had time to look for it.

They have been out of stock before, due to supplier issues. Go to your local dealer, and get him to do a national search through other dealer inventories. Then you will know where you stand. It is a third-party sourced accessory for BMW, for a vehicle that is coming up on 8 years out of production.

If you have to use an aftermarket hitch, it isn't the end of the world. Some of them attach in the same location as the OE hitch, but none of them attach in the same way, since they don't include the internal reinforcement where the bumper shocks were mounted, they just bolt to the sheet metal there. If you have the fore/aft longitudinal brace, at least it is less likely to damage those rear mounts.

Thanks for the help - will start my search now before everybody stops making those
