there are codes for the voltage spikes, those codes can be read by the INPA - i saw them on a friend's 4.4i.
the facelifted 4.8 should have regular heavy-duty alternator and not watercooled - the 4.6iS had a watercooled one...

the battery/alternator/regulator issues can fire up many codes in the system along with other symptoms, like radio cut in/out, AC going dead or full blast... normally, each of those symptoms has its own culprit but when they happen together, the electrical system is to be checked... the ABS module is known for losing its internal contacts in extreme temperatures - usually when it is overheating, even though on mine, it was -40 degrees ambient when i got the trifeca problems for the first time on the 4.6iS

so, you have possible issue with the ABS module, one or more of the wheel sensors, alternator, regulator and battery...

of course, you can throw parts at the problem, and it may fix it... I would suggest get a reading of the codes using the proper software that actually spells out the issue, gives you the engine RPM at the time of issue, the exact mileage when the code was set, so you can relate to the timing of the code, it could be a 2 year old code you are looking at or a 2 hour old...

for example, i attached a shadow error report from my car - this is not a complete report from a single module, just an overall report. With a specific module in focus, you can interrogate it to get more specific information...

I don't know what your repair budget is but I wouldn't be purchasing an alternator to find out it wasn't bad. Especially when I could have troubleshooted to know it wasn't.

The most common problem is the ABS/DSC module. If you have one error code (possibly one wheel speed sensor) bonding wire intermittant, you will get the three yellow lights on the dash. If you have more than one error code, (possibily 2 wheel speed sensors) intermittant, You are now going to get put into "transmission fail safe mode" on top of the three lights.
The module really isn't that sensitive to voltage change (due to internal regulation)... What will cause issues is any lack of voltage to an existing intermittant bonding wire! This "lower" voltage situation will just add to your problems, and possibly trick you into buying a new alternator, when actually, your alternator is with in tolerance.

The bottom line is..... don't get tricked into thinking it's any one part. Do a proper diagnostic, or almost always you will throw your money away! If it is your ABS/DSC module, chances are you will have more than one related code to it.... "the module".... (usually wheel speed sensors)

Ok so I borrowed a code reader: when the issue reared up this am, I captured a P189 transmission code, but that was it...car was barely going down the road, in total limp-home mode and trans issues galore. Limped it to my auto Indy where they put a BETTER code reader & pulled about 10 codes...many of them indicating voltage spikes.

They then installed a voltage reader into my cig. lighter and with the diagnostic hooked up, measured voltages from 12.1 up to 17.3 while idling and with a little gas added: the voltage reader went to "bad" immediately...ie, bad regulator/alternator. So, I have one coming, we'll see if that fixes it all.

17.3V is very bad... the voltage in a running car should never exceed 16V, and even that is the highest threshold specified. the voltage regulator is probably gone bad, unless they can replace the regulator only with little money, you might have to replace the entire alternator... what else did they read? Do you know how to pull on-board voltage reader from the cluster? How to go in TEST mode (i think voltage TEST is #9)

I had to go with a new alternator: couldn't get in just the regulator in-time as our Porsche's are out for maintenance as well.

It also pulled speed sensors (2) of them, and a few others but mostly linked to voltage issues. The Tech saw the voltage issues in a few of the readouts; Neat decoder!

your tranmission module is located under the rear seat on the driver's side, when you pull the seat up, there is a cushion tucked in the corner of seat base, the module is under that cushion. you don't normally need to mess with the module but you might want to check to see if there is anything burnt there - with these voltage spikes you may have some burnt smell there... telling you about it just in case...

I have poor senses, except for my nose. Hot as heck here so windows up & AC running: no smells, but thanks for that update! Hoping all is well with the new alternator in-place. :/

speed sensors will affect the ABS module, the speedometer, the cruise control, the odometer, the transmission and can put engine into failsafe as well... don't ignore it - once alternator is replaced, drive the car for a mile or so, to see if the things cleared up on their own, then clear the codes in the shop, drive the car again, to see if the new codes will set...
