Its because diesel fuel is lighter then normal gas fuel he's beating you by sheer weight difference loool.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most diesel suvs or cars now come turbo

ITS THE TORQUE ..You dont say which 3.0D,but even the earlier 3.0D stock ,has more torque than even some of the V8s ,so will always have quicker acceleration and in gear upto 5000 rpm, then the higher revving petro X5s should have a higher top speed!
If you racing a later 3.0d with twin turbos ,you have no chance even in top speed

What you on about, diesel lighter than petrol and sheer weight difference A 3.0D is heavier that a 3.0i!

Yep,you nearly right X5 Diesel has always been turbocharged!FYI ,some are twin-turbo and the latest M versions ,even have 3 turbos

Since 99% + of USA e53 owners have very little actual experience with a diesel e53 (they weren't imported here) most of our comments will be anecdotal more than actual experience.

But you can see in the chart below...there were 2 diesel engines and you didn't give which one your bud owns. If he has the latter M57TUd...you can see that 0-60 is the same (8.8 sec)...and if your M54b30 has a 5 spd tranny...and your bud has the M57TUd and has the 6 spd tranny...that could be another reason it keeps winning:

Exactly! You need to drive a 3.0D to experience the 460-500Nms+ of torque!Just goes to proof that in real world figures, its a different story!10.1 to 60 in handbook, reality is more like 8.0 .A 3.0i is no match for 3.0D .massive torque difference and torque is acceleration.Even a 4.4 struggles against a stock early 3.0D.Remap the ECU/ECM and 3.0D blows them both away,as well as consuming half as less
For information,we dynoed loads of standard early 3.0Ds (184hp/400Nms..Bmw figures),they all measured above these figures, averaging 195hp/460 Nms..On test track ,with 19" wheels ,we always recorded sub-9 secs to 100 kph!
