Engine swapping

How hard is it to swap an 06 x5 3.0 engine into an 01 4.4 x5. I am thinking about down grading at some point in time. I really like my SAV and dont want to trade it but could live without the 4.4 maintainance and gas mileage.

Thanks

Physically it wouldn't be that difficult as both motors were designed for the E53 platform. Electrical and coding would be a nightmare...

IMO, Unless you want to do it as a challenge or "labor of love" type project....don't expect it to be the economical choice. The cost of everything would more than cover any issues (short of blowing up your motor) for years to come.

Why not sell it and get something that is/will be 'less maintenance & better mpg'?
I can't imagine the cost of the engine purchase/engine swap covering 'less maint and more mpg', and being a benefit...

And the 6 cyl mileage is closer to the v8's mileage than you may realize.
