I scuffed it up a very little with some fine steel wool. Feathered the nicks so they didn't have edges and would blend smooth. Cleaned it with some lacquer thinner and sprayed away.

Much appreciated, looks like the line-x idea coating idea I had wont work as that stuff sprays on too thickly and trim(plus thick paint) may not allow steering wheel controls to fit through, will go get the rustoleum satin black multipurpose spray paint-painters touch its called, then follow your tips after I get trim removed and post a few pics...you had a sports steering wheel too?

I had a peeling steering wheel on one of my BMW's which I have now sold, I purchased an alcantara leather steering wheel cover which came with the thread and needle to stich it into place. It looked very professional when done. almost as good as a brand new leather steering wheel.

thanks fella, its actually the trim 'paint' that is wearing off (stole pic from another post apologies) pretty damn annoying considering this is unique to this car that also happens to be the most expensive car out of the 5 i have owned, an audi80 , saab 95, pugeot, honda civic, and mercedes 190..anyway thanks

No, I had the split trim pieces, 2002 sport wheel. I had changed the console and all the trim but the set didn't come with the lower steering wheel trim. It really looked bad so I painted it black to match the upper trim that was already black.

ok thanks for reply, anyone know if I go for a semi-gloss,gloss black finish whether or not this will be a problem during driving caused by sun reflecting off it?

Shouldn't be any problem with the reflection from the sun.

Ok that's good news, the stuff I will use is alkyd resin based spray paint, used it on my scooter farings and when the stuff cures n hardens it is resistant to petrol, oils, and not easy to scratch at all.... will go for the semi gloss, made my motip dupli in europe....hopefully it will stand up to grubby hands more than the original finish on the trim.......

Yup looks great.....but I am 100% sure with my super grubby hands I will mess up the nice trim, so gonna opt for spraying it over with simoniz tough black satin spray paint if i can get hold of the stuff , if not will just use rustoleum painters touch.....
