Engine Idle RPMs
You can feel the vibration in your seat when it dips and the RPM dial just moves down slightly below the one tick mark. This is not happening all the time, but more frequently now. It is certainly increased in the slight temperature drop. I can’t believe that would be the cause (low 60’s F). While driving it‘s nice and smooth and gets normal fuel consumption. What are the normal expected RPMs at idle? Could this be a vacuum line leak? Oil level and coolant level are good; I check them both every other day as I do have a very small oil leak and a pin-hole leak somewhere in the radiator (the plastic part). I don’t think those are related to the RPM issue, however I’m not a BMW engine expert by any means. Any questions are welcome and I appreciate any input from you all. -Thanks. -Tom

Does anyone have an answer to the questions I listed in the original post?

On mine, it was a vacuum leak at about 170,000 miles. The intake boot had been replaced at 156,000 miles. But this time, all the other vacuum lines were replaced. That bumped the idle speed back up to 650 RPM where it belonged.

mine, did the same thing, I had the rpms at idle reporgramed to the 650 and the computer system updated. I also had a smoke test done. Raising the rpms by program helped it out a lot but every now and then it is a little rough with that little vibration. My Certified Indy stated could be seals in the engine itself

i just had the same problem 3days ago. Oil leaks and coolant leaks. Fixed both. I had my Coolant leak fixed, VCG, spark plugs and OFHG replaced. Got car back and rough idle. Felt like it wanted to stall and sporadic rpm not to mention, very rough start up especially on cold start up. Mech said it's a vacuum leak. During repair, one of the broken hoses got nudged and noticed vacuum plugs where starting to go bad also. Fixed the hoses and replaced the vacuum plug, now running smooth as ever at 650rpm.
Get a smoke test.

I have read in another thread that this can be caused my rips in the diaphrams of the CCV's in each valve cover. 13 dollars each (x2) from ECS tuning. I have mine on order, should be here Monday.
Cheap enough place to start.

After I fixed the VCG and OFHG the rpm and rough start began. the mech did a smoke test and said it was CCV hose and another tear near the dip stick.
Also one plug was torn behind a VCG . It came out to about $70. Now rpm running smooth. Sorry I can't be more specific on the actual part.
