Bmw's are definitely not for the faint hearted when it comes to maintenance but for me and many others I love my X so much more than any American/Japanese competitor that I just handle it, and will do so forever on my 02 x5 4.6is with 127k miles, and loving every moment of it....getting ready for $750 for a steering column U-joint replacement....BTW, I turned 18 about a week ago and everyone thinks I'm crazy to have and maintain my X at this age but its been amazing for 16k miles and enjoy DIY a lot.

I agree with them. BMW's are expensive vehicles to maintain...even if you DIY. Parts costs alone can be significantly higher than other vehicles.
