This reminds me of my college days, I used to park my GSX-R 750 in the living room of my apartment in New Rochelle, NY. Even rebuilt 2 Norton 650 Commando motors on the kitchen table. GFs uncle owned the building, she told me to stop bringing motorcycles inside, told her I would stop.

Went to look at a few used cars with her best friend after parking the GSX-R inside, came back to find the GF had invited all our friends over for my surprise birthday party........SURPRISE, everyone is standing around the bike in the center of my living room, she was PISSED!

I have thought about finding out what the entry requirements are to run the Texas mile. That would be as fast as I would want to go in an X5.

All depends what speed class you want to run in. Pay the fee, install harnesses (over 130mph class I think), run.

John Hennessey started running the TX mile back in the late '80s in a Mitsu 3000 GT twin turbo, HEAVY modded.

Went to open passenger door this morning...wouldn't open. Door is unlocked, handle pulls up and down, just won't open. So much for having the "cold weather package". I'm assuming there is a plastic (or metal) part in there that broke due to the sub-zero temps we've had at night.

Anyone else have this issue that can point me in the right direction? Not really in the mood to take the door panel off today...would rather play with my son and his Xmas gifts, but if it's an easy fix, might tackle it later tonight.

Check the child-lock on the door itself, maybe? Mine has a tiny little tab on the edge of the door (the part that contacts with the body of the car). I though my handle was broken, and when I pushed this little mystery switch, the handle worked again.

1. when you pulled up on the door handle was it hard to pull on?
2.did you feel or hear something snap?
3. if no on the above questions, you might be alright, try using hairdryer or if you have a heated garage put it in there to warm up.(my passenger side door handle wasn`t hard to pull but it didn`t open door so I waitted for a warm day and voila it openned ,then I sprayed teflon on the door handle parts by holding the the outside door handle up and spraying in there and haven`t had a problem since which was back in oct and we`ve had cold weather like -38c with windchill -24 without.

When mine did the same some time ago part #15 on http://www.xoutpost.com/391516-post8.html was broken. Nothing too expensive if you order the part NOT from BMW and do the replacement on your own.

As I understand it, these X5's were assembled in N.America. With that, many of the accessory type items (not main structure) would have been supplied from N.American suppliers-like Dorman, Magnatek, etc. So a lot of the window, door, suspension parts and assemblies were probably from N.American suppliers. The design and specification is all BMW. I believe BMW to a large part is resting on their laurels from their 80's and 90's 3 and 4 hundred series vehicles. Most of us have had experience with them- they may well not be practical now for family use. Enter the X5, basically a truck that has been sold on the BMW credo of a quality, long lasting vehicle-just like those we formerly drove. Crap did they see us coming-building a 6000 lb tank with such light duty underpinnings, transmissions that are marginally designed to handle the torque produced, engines that are unnecessarily complicated for truck use, under-building bodies that are to be used in snow/salt belt areas. Vehicles as complicated and requiring the maintenance of a Ferrari but without the forethought to make them easy to service and maintain. It is nothing short of arrogance to install such an important part as the auto-trans and then not install either automatic or preferably manual means to maintain fluid level (all oil seals are meant to weep fluid to lubricate the seal). I have found it to be no more comfortable than my former Denali, and certainly nor nearly as reliable. I love my X5 for what it is but am sorely disappointed in what it is not.
