Good advice guys. That's my plan.

The two install companies I've called swear their mobile service is as good as their shop service . . . But I'm also inclined to think it's marketing lip service.

Higher end shops that do mobile work will generally have the appropriate tools such as the apparatus that fits on the vehicle and allows a single installer to properly place the windscreen and allow the proper range of motion with a single installer. A guy that shows up with only 2 suction pucks and a manual squeeze gun for the urethane should raise some immediate concerns!!

I do agree that a shops best work will generally be found in house....BUT, that doesn't mean that a reputable shops mobile work is anything to fear either. If they have the tools, and can do it properly with the added bonus of them coming to you, I wouldn't hesitate.

When I set up the install for my CC glass windscreen, It was initially for them to come and do it while the X was here at home. I opted for the install at their shop because I could get the screen 2 weeks earlier (kid-in-the-candy-store syndrome).

Mobile glass apparatus arms are are only capable of rough positioning and supporting. Mobil glass companys like to make TV ads stating "we use the same technology the auto manufacturer used to install the OE glass", when in fact the arms used to install the OE glass has optical position sensors, pressure sensors, progressive bedding pressure/pressure position programmed patterns (yes, it's a computer controlled action/reaction sensing robot)....... The mobile arm has NONE of these things!

To set a large pc of glass into the bedding adhesive correctly, the top edge of the glass should set first, from the center out to the sides SIMULTANEOUSLY, this is not possible with one tech and a positioning arm.

After the last hailstorm here in TX, Safelite was pushing each mobile tech to do a minimum of 12 glass installs per day. How would you like to be the 12 of the day.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
I'm guessing they work 9 hour days too and do some overtime every other Saturday too?

The question isn't would you like to be the 12th one, its would you like to be that "Friday afternoon install" after hustling all week after a hailstorm, and of course you gotta bring in that BMW that is just so much harder to install glass properly on (compared to a Kia Optima, of course)

LOL

Really. Safelite did 4 mobile windshield installs on a co-workers Mitsu Galant (3 different techs came to our workplace), all four leaked along the top edge. Finally brought it to their shop for the 5th install and it sealed correctly.

We built a castle in the swamp and it sank.
We built a second castle, and it sank too.
We built a third castle. It tipped over, caught on fire, then it sank.
We built a fourth castle, and it's still standing.

I couldn't resist.

Very nice z168 . . . thanks for the links. I'm calling them today reference a few other part needs.

srmmmm . . . not sure how your post is useful on a vehicle maintenance forum . . . probably more appropriate for some type of casual entertainment blog, etc.

The local shop that does glass work for my dealer matched Safelite's price of $268 for a Saint-Gobain Sekurit window installed. Replaced the wiper motor and did all the trim prep/reinstall myself. Not as good as new, but as close as I'll get.
