Trunk Lid Garage Mishap! Don't Be Next!!

Happy Monday Morning XOutposters!!

I'll share in my grief to remind you all of the consequences of this oft thought about mistake.

Got too distracted yesterday morning and backed out of garage with trunk lid up. The wiper base grabbed the garage header and the rear window exploded as designed. Some folks like to beat-up on BMW/X5 quality . . . but after being humiliated at my blunder, I was impressed to notice NO DAMAGE to the lid or hinges. And the wiper motor beefy plastic mounts broke away from their attachments WITHOUT bending any portion of the lid.

So, I figured I got off with just a busted window and wiper assembly, right? Not so fast . . . I can't find any reference for the rear window as a separate part, new or used. Looks like might have to replace the whole lid.

Couple questions for your expertise:

1. Has anyone seen a trunk lid window sold separately?

2. Anyone have a lead to a rust free used trunk lid in titanium silver?

I've had nightmares about this, but can't believe I actually did it!! I hope a good look at my photo will provide viewers with many years of deterrence.

WTF is in the reflection in the glass?

That really sucks. Reminds me of a friend I was following home after a ride, drove into the garage with his brand new Kestrel Carbon Fiber bike on the roof rack....KEEERRUUUNNNCCCHHHHH!

BMW built quality cars/SAVs. E53 X5 is built like a tank. Wish I could say that about their plastic parts.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
Definitely a good reminder! I almost shit myself last year because I had my hatch open (tailgate up) and my wife hit the garage door close button before I closed it. Thank god the X5 was pulled up far enough (this was before my Triumph was in the garage), and the door was able to shut without hitting anything.

Had it been a foot farther back though, my tailgate would have sustained serious damage. Did you try calling a few auto glass places like Safelite or something? I'm amazed the glass isn't available.

DSAviate,

Unfortunately, I've done that too but I got off a LOT lighter than you did. Sorry to see how much damage you had.

I had to replace my rear wiper and I have a scratch on the paint above the roundel.

Glass alone should be available. Check realoem under vehicle trim/glazing.

Have you looked into getting it replaced through insurance? The glass is likely to be a pretty penny!

Looking in RealOem I don't see any glass. Where is it hiding?

Sorry for your trouble; I've thought about that happening as well. My brother did the trick with driving in the garage with a bike on a roof rack too. The noise was bad, but the damage to the bike, garage and car... Yikes.

I'd call around to some local auto glass shops to see what their price is, and if it's close in price to that trunk lid in the Chicago CL ad, I'd go that direction. Painting the steel to match yours shouldn't be too bad.
