Is it dangerous to NOT vent your battery ?

Is it really necessary ? Can it cause any damage ? Corrosion ?

there are sealed batteries, and there are vented... basically, vented batteries are NOT sealed, therefore, the fumes from the internal chemical processes are not contained in the battery itself and are released outside... the battery compartment essentially is located inside the cabin, therefore, the toxic fumes may accumulate in concentration that can be harmful to humans, can settle in the surrounding areas of the plastic tub where the battery is located - think of leaking battery in the old transistor radio...

besides, venting the battery is not a tremendously difficult task - why would you not do it in the first place?

Thanks. The vehicle I just bought has a battery that is not vented, not sealed. I'm going to change out the battery. I was wondering if there is any signs of damage I should look for. I was thinking of replacing it with an Auto Zone Duralast Gold H8-DLG.

Thanks again for your reply.

I just bought an H8 battery, as my original died, and the replacement died within a month. I went online, paid for the battery online, got a $25 discount, that is not available otherwise at the counter, and picked up the battery from my local store. This is AGM battery, 900 CCA, even though the online description says 850CCA, the label on the battery has 900 CCA... so far it is holding up.

without the core charge, the total out the door price is $153.94, that included $7.85 VA sales tax (the battery came to $146.09).

Online coupon code that is good in November of 2013 id CT27.

Term, when you bought the battery, does it come with vent tube/kit?
I didn't have it on mine as it's not the original battery and it was NOT vented outside. Needless to say, I fabricated a kit to make sure it does. I get the one from Advanced Autoparts since they are cheaper after discount. IIRC, I paid about $130. They are made by the same manufacturer anyway.

no, this one did not have a vent kit, so i reused the one that already was in the car. At first, i got an H8 battery from Wal-Mart, rated at 900 CCA, the battery tested over a 1000 CCA out the doors... Later, in 3 weeks, the battery tested at 700 CCA, and after a recharge by wal mart, they gave it back to me at 800 CCA. I returned that battery (the voltage was at 10.45 V steady which is far less then the nominal 12V. the battery did start the car, but it was a very weak cranking... someone earlier mentioned that the walmart battery may have had a bad cell... i agree with that, but don't need that much aggravation for my own money - so i returned it.... neither battery came with a tube kit

Ditto with the YES...vent your battery. I'd do it whether it was an lead/acid battery or an AGM battery (if it has the little hole for the vent tube to hook up to).

When hydrogen off gases are releases from the battery, it can cause corrosion as well as an explosion (can occur is a spark results from an overcharge situation from the althernator...which can commonly occur from normal driving)

(battery exploded from non venting of battery in an e38)

(corrosion damage from shoving battery into place without hooking up vent tube in an e38) Image by: SOBEK (bimmerforums)

(and more corrosion at end of vent tube that has been pulled up and not vented completely to the exterior of the vehicle...also on an e38)...images by cyclops (bimmerboard) just posted 10/25/13

As far as the "vent kit"...only the top venting batteries come with a "kit...which extends over from the top center of the battery to meet up with the vehicles vent tube that snakes its way to the exterior of the vehicle. If the battery vents from the side like the original battery...then all you need is the little black elbow that originally came with the car to connect the replacement battery to the vehicle's vent tube:

Item #2 (BMW part # 61 21 1 377 835) is the little elbow that goes in-between the vehicle's vent tube and the battery...it costs between 52¢-$1.50:
