Aye Mike... Thats a nice fat present the X dropped on you. Sounds like a tranny problem to me. If it was Trans Case, you would still have RWD and the shift points would be fine. But since you get grinding and thuds ad surges... Sounds like the clutch packs are slipping and once enough pressure builds up, it catches and you get the surge. If the RPMS get high enough and it catches, it may be too fast and thats where the grinding comes in.

Just so I understand, your thoughts are to junk to 4.8 and do a switch to make the 4.4 into a 4.8is? Minus the engine? Hopefully you can get this figured out.

I'm assuming when you post 'no codes', you're using a real code reader like a GT or INPA, not the little cheap thing I have at home… If not, get a real code reader to read codes so you have a chance at diagnosing it.

Since you have both transmissions, all you have to lose is labor pulling them both out and comparing…

I guess you could attempt a rebuild, but there are specialty shops that can do that for less hassle is my guess.

If it were me, I'd do the following:

1) check that transmission fluid level is correct, if no add and see what happens. If yes, go to step 2.

2) start calling transmission rebuild shops and ask them what they think. If it sounds reasonably affordable, then drop tranny off at their place. If it is too much, then go to step 3.

3) drop and swap. Do a fluid, filter, etc. change.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hold up. Didn't TwinsPoppa have mad crazy ass issues when he put in something dealing with his lights. There is a thread somewhere something similar happened when the fogs were wired, or the rings, I have to find it. 4x4 came on, and trans went nuts.

I think I know which thread you're referencing slick, it was for angel eyes as a DRL....IIRC, with his install he used the purple entertainment wire as a trigger, but tapped the main power for his rings somewhere in the ecu box. The added slight draw from circuits that are otherwise sensitive to voltage fluctuations is likely what caused his issues.

Yea something along those lines, and he got the 4x4 issue and his trans went nuts.

That grinding in park sounds nuts. You really need to get under and start diagnosing.

You know, that grinding noise, that does sound like a shot transfer case. Raise the car and get under it, then have someone put it in park.

I can't find the thread on having problems after wiring up the fogs. I tried everything, but there was someone who had a problem, and it was screwing something up with the computers.

Anyway, your damage sounds physical.
