Do yourself a favor and if you have to drill this stud out, get a high-quality left handed drill bit/extractor set (I have one by Mac Tools -- bought used on ebay). Butter. So easy to use.

I'm done with crappy drill bits and brittle extractors. Taking the head off to a machinist and getting it torched out will make the extractor set seem very, very, very cheap in comparison.

Thats a good word Kirk. Thankfully I was able to get the stud out without to much effort. I will say this project was quite the challenge. My biggest frustrations were dropping small parts into the eternal black hole that lies beneath. Never to be seen again.

You should have stuffed clean shop rags in there (cover large openings with taped down cardboard), done the job, shop vac small particles, then removed rags (cardboard).

I learned the value of good extraction tools when I snapped a wheel stud on the race car. As I was staring at the broken stud, then my watch looking at the time to get the car ready for qualifying, and then back at the stud, the guy parked next to me brought his Mac extrator set over. That drill bit cut through the wheel stud like it was soft cheese. I couldn't believe it. Bought a set off ebay the next week.

Yeah, I made the qualifying session with time to spare.

Glad it all worked out!
In the past i have coaxed out snapped bolts and studs with my dremel. using a tiny ball grinding tip (and plenty of shop rags and cardboard to cover openings) the high speed vibrations was enough to wiggle loose a number of bolts (including one crank shaft pulley bolt in a honda engine!!)
i was intending to use the gridner bits to create a slot which i could use to turn out the broken bolts. to my surprise they just started to turn out on their own when the dremel head was working them!
this is my first line when i break a bolt off! second, is the mac extractors. then finally, i drill and retap ! always the last resort though!!!!
