Smile Genuine BMW Alternator versus Aftermarket?

Hello,

Model : 2004 E53 3.0i with 80k miles
Alternator: "Original" BMW Valeo 140amp

* What is the average life of an alternator for a M54 6 cylinder ?
* Should I stick with the Genuine BMW RMFD part versus an aftermarket?

Also, is this a good time to replace my fan blade, fan clutch and tensioners (mechanical to hydraulic).

Note: I already replaced my idler pulleys, serpentine belt and a/c belt about 1 or two years ago.

Thanks!

No clue on actual life, but guessing there's lots of 200k+ M54's out there with the original alternator. That might be a better question to ask on a 3 or 5 series forum because you'll get a larger population to gather data from.

Are you having an issue with your or is this preventative maintenance?

Yes, between now and 100k is when I'd recommend a new fan clutch. The blade itself should be ok to keep using.

If you aren't getting lots of noise or abnormal belt wear, I'd leave the tensioners alone.

My alternator went at 126,000 miles. I'm in Texas so the electrical load is typically from A/C use, and the fact my CEO likes her seat heated almost all the time no matter what the weather.

I've also had one tensioner replaced at about the same mileage, but never any issue with the fan clutch.

2002 X5 3.0 246,300 miles
2004 325i 110,000 miles

I can't speak to 'average,' but my seller/dealer, a bmw specialty shop, replaced the alternator in mine as part of the pre-sale prep. at 81k miles - along with a new fan clutch, both about to go in their judgment. From the service sheet, they installed a bmw alternator [$559 entry on the service sheet].

My genuine BMW alternator was way expensive, $639 IIRC.

Had my original alternator rebuilt @ 88K miles.

Currently @ 154K miles without an issue.

BMW reman parts have a 24 month warranty.... Something to consider when comparing other options.

Thanks for the all the information guys!

I experienced (one time) only, battery light+CES+ came on
Voltage with no load was 13.2v and with load 12.5v

I am just getting ready (if there comes a time) when the red battery light stays on.

There are plenty of alternator starter rebuilder shops in Shecago. Had the alternator for my PORSCHE rebuilt for $90.00 at one of those shop.
