hmmm my running boards on my 3.0i look just like that, how exactly can you tell those are knockoffs. Sorry to bring up an old post. Me personally, I like the wood grain. He has wood grain in places I wish my x had them. I get into my friends Tahoes and Lexus and I see wood everywhere, I hardly see wood in the X and there are places it really needs it. I'm Not a fan of CF and the black look. Personal taste I guess.Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
You have to look "closelier" to see. If you look hard enough you can see the arches are no wider and those are the adhesive versions that just stick on top of the other ones. Plus, do you REALLY think this guy is going to drop $700 on OE running boards from the dealer, considering his wood grain stick on dash kit and stuff was probably $100 off ebay? $280 is steep enough, I doubt he'd spend $400 more for OE. These are the knockoffs from Taiwan:

E53 x5 1999 2006 Aluminum Brushed Side Steps Running Boards for BMW | eBay

I'd love to have me some factory running boards on my X.

Wood trims are a classic and they still look good in some cases like in my wife's E70...

The colour match is just perfect (to our taste) and I wouldn't tamper with it at all.
On the other hand , in some other model like my E53 4.8 , the wood trim just made it look even more outdated. BMW's design philosophy has changed and most of their sport models are now with "modern" and trendier look. At the Montreal auto show last week , the M3 was presented with the CF trims. Even BMW designers black out everything they can (again in the sportier models).
People buy brand new high end cars and black out the chrome cause black wasn't available.
Like you said , art is in the eye of the beholder but it's much more than art...it's trendy. The more chrome your car has the older(dated) it looks even if it's a brand new 2014 high end car. I like a TOUCH of chrome but thats about it.
