I went with Cool Carbon pads on the last pad/rotor change. High cost but work great. Cool Carbon designs/develops/manufactures in Germany and ONLY produces pads for BMW, Porsche and StopTech.

You may want to contact BavAuto. If I recall correctly, the front 4.8is pads are identical to those used on one of the 5 series,

i'm getting ready to do brakes and possibly rotors, i think i'm going with Brembo rotors from tire rack, while i was on there i also notice they now have Brembo brakes, anyone know if these are dustless or any good ?
i've used akebono for yrs on my E46 and loved the price, dustless factor and they were still decent for stopping. so i'm trying to decide if i switch from akebono to brembo or not? |

I purchased the cheap, OE equivalent pads/rotors from ECS.
Braking performance has not changed one bit from the way it was with OE parts. Cost me half as much as most other options and the braking performance is great.

I used Akebono street ceramics and Brembo rotors in a nice package put together by FCP Groton. I agree the initial bit isn't as strong as OEM, but you can still initiate ABS interaction without any problem in a panic stop! I do like the ceramics when towing the PWC in the summer - never any worry about fade. I've got 180,000 miles on the rotors now with still no measurable wear!

Aftermarket:
Seems like the practical route to take is get Axxis Deluxe Advanced and the enthusiast route to take is either Cool Carbon Sport or EBC Redstuff 3000. I've had Axxis Deluxe Advanced paired with Zimmermann rotors for almost 6 years (45K+ miles) and counting. Rotors showed very little wear and pads still have about 1/2 left on them. Very quiet (well...may be a squeal here and there) and super low dust. If I can still get Axxis Deluxe, that will be my next pads again. Same goes for Zimmermann rotors. The best that I was able to get out of OE rotors and pads were about 33K miles, for comparison.

Yeah, the OE pad compound eats rotors up.
Almost every vehicle manufacturer uses an agressive pad compound, they would rather have pads that resurface rotors after sitting/rusting on the new car lot at the dealership. Brake jobs on new vehicles would eat into dealer profits. If BMW provided free lifetime pads for their vehicles, I would still pass on them.
