Off topic, but I'll share a DoD auction story. Because the widow abandoned it, in 2005 or so DoD was auctioning a 1999 Benz 300TD with around 5k miles on it that had been in storage [and shipped back from Germany at gov't expense] since the owner, an active duty LTC, died in Germany. It was at Red River Army Depot, but internet auctioned. My bro-in-law and I drove out overnight to inspect it. In great shape. I pulled samples for blackstone tests, inspected, and was ready to pay as much as 18-19k for it, expecting to spend 2-3 grand on fluids, brakes, filters, hoses, tires etc. When the auction started, price jumped immediately to 22k+. As best I recall, it sold for over $24k. I instead bought the CEO another 2009 300TD with 80k miles on it for 18k .......

stunt,

Here's some information that may prove to be useful to you:

Ref. thread:

My question to romeokc10; Were you successful in locating all the leak points? I'm curious as I have some leaking going on and don't know if it's the lower or upper oil pan gaskets or something else. BTW, I already replaced the valve cover gaskets.

Here's his response with some very useful info.:

I can't remember where the thread is, but the topic was about all of the potential leak points on the V-8 engine, I used the Real OEM website to find all the parts I needed. Here's a list of the o-rings I replaced, just look them up on Real OEM to see where and how many you need.

1. Oil dipstick tube o-rings

2. Both oil lines, both ends and new clamps for the oil filter housing. This is why I hate remote cartridge oil filters, of course you have to have 2 hoses and that equals 4 potential leak spots. Give me a plain old spin on filter with the housing bolted to the block any day.

3. There's a mounting block that the hoses from the oil filter housing connect to on the engine block. Behind that mounting block is an o-ring.

4. The valve cover gaskets.

I think that's it, now keep in mind I had this done while he was doing my timing chain guides earlier this year, so access was much easier. Just looking at how buried the oil filter hose connections are will dissuade you. And from what I read about the dipstick tube o-rings, they're no easier.

If you haven't done so I suggest you remove the stiffener plate and the black plastic splash shield that covers the main pulley and belts. That way you can really get a good look at what's leaking, the front of my engine was always wet at the bottom front, not anymore due to replacing the dipstick tube o-rings. I doubt I'll have the upper pan leak fixed, even my Indy said that is a helluva job. I think I'll put the stiffener plate back on so it will stop leaking oil on my driveway...lol! Besides I'm gonna get rid of it this fall, got my eye on a 1st Gen Grand Cherokee SRT8, good luck!

Looks like he has been absent since the end of July. I hope he is okay.
