Did you ever get the FAILSAFE message in Neutral or Park after starting the engine from cold i.e. before you'd even engaged either Drive or Reverse?

Yes, I would always get the message before going into drive or reverse.

That's got to be low battery voltage, surely?

That had been suggested in another thread, but I would still get the message after letting the battery sit on a charger overnight. I even installed a brand new battery and was still getting the message when starting.

I don't know what kind of diagnostic is performed on start-up, but something other than low battery voltage must be able to trigger that message, even before going into gear, no?

Sorry, I only joined the thread part way through.

Generally the FAILSAFE message is flagged by the ECU when it detects an unexpected speed difference across the turbine & output speed sensors i.e. it is protecting the transmission from uncontrolled clutch slip. Obviously in Park and Neutral none of the clutches are applied (well, actually the F-brake is, but let’s not let the facts get in the way of a good argument) so there’s no slip to detect i.e. the transmission output speed is zero and the turbine speed is equal to engine speed as the torque converter isn’t loaded.

Your fault therefore sounds electrical. So you aren’t getting a P0705 error from the inhibitor switch? Did the error seem to be flagged by the actual movement of the gear lever?

The FAILSAFE message would appear upon starting the engine before even touching the gear lever.

One other thing I failed to mention was that once I started getting the message, the shift from Park to Reverse was rather abrupt, not smooth like when the transmission was acting normally.

It certainly will be interesting to see how the transmission acts once I get everything back together again!

Haven't had a chance to work on this project more lately, but my 20Kg weight did show up today. Maybe this entire trans teardown will have been for nothing, but at least I'll have piece if mind when it's all back together!

It's bigger and heavier than it looks! That's a 39" 4K monitor in the background! And yes, the mouse pad lady is well endowed, although nothing compared to my wife!

4k Screens are the shit. I got to test one of my friends monitors out for a day on my work PC. Once I gave it back, my screen looks blurry and like total shit.

If you going to bring up your wife's endowment, you need to prove it, or it didn't happen lol.

Is that weight to compress the clutches packs? Damn man, how much did that sucker set you back? It looks like a fancy washer.

Definitely given my 20.4kg weight an inferiority complex now...

Lol, wife would kill me if she found out I posted a pic of her online I think. I'll think about it however if she pisses me off or something.

Got that weight on eBay for $70 bucks.

Yes, that 4k monitor is awesome. It's not really a computer monitor but rather a TV, but tigerdirect had an awesome deal on those Seiko monitors. It was $399 with free shipping. I paid way more than that for my 24" 1920x1200 back in the day! The only catch is that it is not HDMI 2.0 so it will only do 30Hz @ the native resolution which is 3840 x 2160.
