Just like any used car you purchase, these will require preventative and timely maintenance in the first few years, just don't go cheap on parts, find a good indy who knows what he is doing or if you feel comfortable than DIY.
Honestly its really not as bad as some would have you feel. Sure if you paid dirt cheap for your E53 and its high in miles and age I would expect to put some money into the car maintenance wise. But after 2+ years of ownership it's honestly just like owning any used car out of warranty, I fix things if they break and I also do some things preventatively, any and all money put in is way cheaper than the car payment on an LCI E70 diesel that's for sure.
