Response to rear driveshaft removal problem e53 4.4

I ran into this same problem yesterday and eventually found out what the problem was. There is a centering bushing that fits in the end of the driveshaft which then slides over the pin on the end of the transmission (or maybe technically the transfer case). The centering bushing has a metal insert formed inside a rubber outer material. The metal insert becomes fixed to the transmission output pin. I heated it up with a torch and melted the rubber. Then I could pull the shaft off the pin. I then used more heat and a puller to get the remaining metal ring off the transmission pin. Obviously you need a new centering bushing since you destroy the old one to remove it.

^ Yep. Brings back bad memories of fighting with my rear shaft for a well. Centering bushing had fused to the output pin of xfer case.
