Will do. It'll probably be this weekend but I will check and report back. I might end up getting a new key since I only have one key and would feel a lot more comfortable knowing I have a spare.

That's a great looking color! With the miles that are on it you're in the sweet spot (150-200) where the timing chain guides will fail and need to be replaced. Do a search and you will find several threads on the subject, it's been happening a lot lately as us V8 owners cars get older. Depending on where you take it the cost can run anywhere from $2000-$5000 dollars, or you can do it yourself, drive safe and enjoy.

Thanks man I really like the color as well. I'll have to check the records and see if the previous owner had the guides replaced when he owned it. And I thought about doing chrome tips but I haven't decided yet.

Just updated it. And it definitely isn't bad looking, I'm just not sure if I want to black the grills out and have no chrome or if I want to leave it

Any data to support your statement?
Many 540i E39 (same M62TU engine) owners on bimmerforums still have the original guide on theirs with over 200k miles. Your statement makes it seem like it would definitely failed in that mileage range, which is not true.
Moreover, the OP has N62 in his, not the M62TU as in yours.

Please top scaring new owner. He didn't ask for any owner experience.

I've heard of some horror stories of deteriorating on higher mileage on M62s. My friend had a 97 540i with the M62B44 that needed timing chain guides after about 160,000 miles. His was very unusual because the inside of his motor was very clean and looked to be well maintained. The only other times I've heard of it being a real issue is when the motors are abused and not maintained properly. We had a 740il with the same engine and never experienced any guide problems. Given my X5 has the N62B44 I really can't comment on prone it is to guide failure. We had a 745i and now a 645ci with the same motor but they were not at that high a mileage.
