I can honestly say that this is the first time I have ever seen someone ask how to turn ON a SES light.

It's not so much about turning it on as it is about having it in working order....

To the op, I think they're LED's...so you're likely going to have to pull the cluster out and disassemble it. The good news is that there's probably a DIY/walk through for the procedure somewhere here! Scan the Car first though as it wouldn't surprise me to find out the previous owner intentionally disabled the light.

Since the bulb only comes on at the start of the engine start process and only if there is a DTC, most likely the Previous Owner removed the SES lamp because it was on. I have never seen a SES, MIL, CEL light ever burn out.

Get a code reader and scan the X for DTC.

There are two screws at the top of the cluster that must be removed and you can then wiggle the cluster out. Careful as the wiring harness(es) are still attach to the cluster.

If you do a search on you tube there is probably a video on how to remove the cluster for a BMW. The bulb is a regular incendescent bulb and not a LED bulb.

Hope yours doesn't have the issue mine had - one of the previous owners put electrical tape over it. I could only laugh when I saw it. They are LEDs though, not bulbs. You should see it when you turn the key forward.

My E36 had those. The E53 didn't. Trust me . There are back light bulbs that dim, but the indicators don't.
