I can say for sure the SES warning light is a very small LED. The guy I knew who had to replace it found one in Radio Shack. He was on the board a long time ago in the mid 2000's. It has to be soldered to the board and in the correct polarity.

Hi All,

Mine are LED's (post facelift model) and in the 3.0D, that doesn't display either when starting (yes, it has been checked out and it is fine). For some reason, they never programmed the diesels for that light to come on.

Even in the Cluster test, it doesn't light up.

I also know other E53 models it doesn't come on either, BUT, I don't know about the 3.0L

I would prefer mine to come on while starting up just for piece of mind.

I tried with all the "software -Dis, Inpa, Etc" to find an area that turns it on and off, but cant.

Rob

thanks for all the replies, but sadly yes they are leds.also the 3 other leds that sit between the mph&rpm gauges. don't light either one looks like a triangle and i guess abs and a symbol of 2cars.i'll try to take it apart this weekend and check radio shack for the leds.

do a TEST 2 to see which lights need to be replaced...

And yes, the WDS refers to the Check Engine Light as an LED...

No, I understood. Typically the issue is getting the light to turn off and stay off so I found it interesting to see an issue with the light not coming on. My apologies for not contributing any solid info to find a solution. I do hope you get it sorted.

Negative. Those bulbs only light up the mileage, temp and message screen.
Hopefully as said, the PO didn't put a black tape over it.
(I think I response to your thread on bimmerforums or bimmerfest)

well today i took the cluster apart. to find that yes somebody put 3 pieces of black tape 1 for the ses 1 for the dsc light and 1 for the brake/abs light.
so in a way that is good as no cluster repair is needed. now to diagnose as to why the dsc,and brake/abs lights won't go out

Were you made aware there was a problem by the seller? Having put black tape over three very important lights seems to me as deceitful.

Unless the PO was the original owner, it will be hard to prove that he was the one that placed the tape on the cluster. Most states has the buyer beware attitude toward the purchase of a use car.

Most likely it a wheel sensor that needs to be replaced, but you should have the X scan to determine the exact cause for those lights being on. A OBD II scanner will not read any codes for the ABS, DSC and brakes, but it can read most SES codes.
