I just scanned the car again and I got DSC 5dea error which has something to do with the transfer case. I am pretty sure I might have seen it before but I just cleared it and for some reason it didn't triggered any thought to connect it to the noise I had.

Now I am pretty sure it is not the resonator. That indy didn't diagnose it right.

I did a search and found the same issue on X3 but no solution.

BMW X3, 2004, 2.5cc, auto gear, Petrol. "5dea Transfer case Temperature? - Fixya

BMW X3 2004. Diagnostic computer error message "5dea Transfer case Temperature

BMW X3 2004-2.5 litr. error message

Any thoughts? Could it be the transfer case actuator?

Listen to the car when you shut off. If you hear that cracking clanking noise, almost like a brake-less drill shutting down, then it's the transfer case actuator gear. But I also had a trifecta of lights on the dash when it would do that noise.

Time to update this thread.
Here is what was causing the noise. It tricked me to believe that the noise was caused by clutch plates or something in the transfer case or transmission.

... just a little dent on the resonator. I have got a new resonator from ECS in and the noise is gone.

I didn't. It was an indy shop that suggested it but because I had a transfer case error (5dea) and the noise was so like loose gears/clutches I just couldn't believe the indy. The small dent didn't convinced me...
I decided changing the resonator was the cheapest try and error attempt vs. a tranny swap or fix...

Glad to hear you got it sorted. You had mentioned that you were losing power when this sound became evident. Has this disappeared?

PS. You helped me with laptop software a year or so ago. Thanks again for that.

Was just under mine, looking at doing the trans fluid and checking the mech. sleeve to see if I should get a new one. Looks like it was wet at one time so will need to get one.

While there I looked at my resonator and was surprised to see I had a small dent in what appears to be the same spot. Seems surprising that such a slight dent could be the trouble it was.

I do have an unusual sound/vibration at certain RPM's as well and I am curious to see if my dent is causing a similar sound. The difference is I am not noticing any performance change when this occurs.

Perhaps, we could meet one day and you could take mine out and let me know if it's the same as yours was.
