Dreaded AUTO LEVEL SUSPENSION INACTIVE grrr!

Hi again X5 peops... 4.8is problems ensue!

I am keen to know the answer to this!
What is 'DEVIATION RIDE LEVEL' ?? any ideas?

background...
8 months ago bought an X5 4.8is with full BMW service history.
It is a Dec 2004 vehicle & has now done 85K miles only
It is lovely...... immaculate...... however......

On the service history it has had the suspension air bags replaced.

A week ago I got the thing I had most feared.......
Dreaded AUTO LEVEL SUSPENSION INACTIVE notification.
Light went off in 'uppy downy' control & tyre flat indicator also came on!

Pls help...
The car is sitting level.

OK my pal runs reputable local garage.
We put it on the diagnostic - wiped the fault so that we could level the car. It was not much out.

I set it to the 722mm & 724mm settings - hope that is right. (with tape measure only).
The pump said it was running just over 13bars when it activated - which seems to be correct. We could move individual corners of the car (or axle at a time with no probs)
Also checked the 7.5 & 30amp fuses behind boot side panel.
We pressed the button (on diagnostic) that says set zero level - front then rear - again car stays level - & remembers height - no sag.

The original codes were ...
#32 EHC: CAN Bus
#74 EHC: Accumulator pressure remains constant (accumulator filling requested)

We can then raise/lower the car up and down on the usual interior switch/control.

However 100yds down road and the dreaded message returns - all switches off again - but car level!

We delved further in with the diagnostic - now this is were I don't understand the terminology!!

There was a page that said ...
DEVIATION RIDE LEVEL
Front Left 17 mm
Front Right 121 mm
Right Left 162 mm
Rear right 182 mm

Why is the front right so different.
Can anyone shed light on what this all means....

Also how the heck to I get rid of the puncture (flat tyre) yellow light/sign...

I know that there is lots on this fault generally - can anyone help...pls pls.

Is getting me down big time!

Will I ever cure this?

M

First and foremost do you have GT1 or INPA software? The values you set it to are actually higher then factory 4.8is numbers. Theres no bad raising it a few mm either maybe the roads are bad around you or something. Stock values are 707mm front, 709mm rear.

Alot of times if you get random messages like this but everything appears to be working fine. It just needs to be recalibrated.

I actually just reread it and you said set zero level. So im assuming you are using GT1. In that case i would try a recalib of the whole system. Also hooking it back up after you get the message again is it the same codes or not? Mine VERY rarely and usually in the winter.when temps is below freezing may throw a self level inactive. But i just turn off and turn back on and gone. Ontop it didnt have any codes.

So are you getting the same codes again?

Hi and thanks - codes seem to change a little - also was unsure about height - everyone seemed to say 722 & 724 on here.
Is 707 & 709 defro the right height for my year etc?
If so will change to 707 & 709 and see if that makes any difference to the ride.
Being a bit new to this diagnostic stuff (although I used to be an electronics engineer - derrr - LOL) so not sure if the gear is 'GT1 or INPA' ?
How do I re-calibrate whole system - sorry not sure how?
And yes - in West Sussex - roads terrible!
very best
M
PS: In December it did throw up the inactive message once - that time just turned off and back on!

EHC 74 is a code for the compressor, usually when it's running too slow, that's why it says "pressure remains constant"

The module is looking for the compressor to test ok in a certain time frame, over time, the seal on the pump weakens.

If you still have that fault I would buy a compressor seal rebuild kit off eBay (search for "wabco compressor rebuild"), and install it. It comes with a new seal and will run you 50 bucks.

There is a deviation built into the computer which will throw a soft fault if you are off on your ride heights by more than 3/8 from offset corners (aka opposite sides or opposite axles). If your ride heights are ok you shouldn't be worrying, even if they are 15mm higher than stock.

Did you clear the faults in the module when you scanned it? The faults won't clear unless you do it yourself, so those could be previous errors.

I would reset the faults, see what comes back. If the EHC 74 comes back repair the compressor, and re calibrate the heights using your function of choice (you can run the zero point function or re calibration routine)

Let us know

Big thanks Ricky Bobby - will look into all this!
And yes I did manually clear the faults - still can't make out why the 'deviation' value is so low on the front left according to the machine - is that a good thing?

As long as it's not throwing faults it's ok. And as long as you are physically measuring from bottom lip of fender to lower edge of wheel to be sure your heights are spot on you are on the right track.

Ehcii isn't the best air suspension in the world, but I won't complain since its a 13 year old system

Hi all & thanks for your help.
I have had the seal(s) done in the compressor. The old 'ring' was really worn.
We have fired it all back up and cleared the fault - once again I can raise and lower the car from the diagnostic machine or by dash control...
The car stays level at the height we set it - this time 707 & 709mm
However the moment it is driven a few hundred yards the fault/warning 'inactive' returns.
The pump is still pumping to just over 13bars (like before)....tomorrow I will try to find out what the latest fault codes are... grrrr!
At least one thing is eliminated.
Any ideas?
best

You'll have to let us know what faults it is throwing now.

Then we can go from there. If the only fault that is left is the canbus error, it might be the module needing recoding or replacement, but don't quote me.
