rotted windshield trim
I just noticed the rubber trim above my windshield has a lot of pitting and when i took a closer look, the rubber insert between the trim and roof is rotted out. I put i finger in one spot and saw it crumble a bit. Has anyone replaced the part without replacing the glass ? Glass is still ok inspite of dings and scratches ( its an '06). |

The upper trim is simply removed by pulling it out, ensuring that all has been removed/cleaned from the channel and a new one pressed in. They are readily available at any BMW dealership and think I paid something like $25 for a new one:

Is the rubber in the channel part of it ? Realoem listed another part (51317061285)not sure if its needed. |

The channel is just the gap between the glass and the painted body and the strip just pulls out as one piece and you simply press the new strip in. Just ensure that you remove any dirt, debris or remains of the old strip after removing and before installing the new one. I am not sure what those other parts are for but when I replaced mine I just purchased the strip and no other parts.

i did find a picture of the trim in ECS tuning and now i see its all 1-piece. As you said, simply pull out and press in. so im ordering it, it only cost $21 + shipping.
Thank you again and appreciate the quick response. |

the R&R of the strip is not too hard at all.
Just don't force it out or in, you risk cracking the glass. Easily doable though.

There's a recent thread from about the past 6 months where a member wrote a DIY, do a search for it.

here's the thread I bookmarked. I have the same issue but haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. Does it leak if you don't fix it? I Haven't noticed any issues from it...
