oil change, torn CCV, oil filler cap leaking, spark plugs & blue smoke!!!

who thought that a small tune up will unveil the mother of all smokes :valve stem seals!

last weekend decided to change the oil since it was due and we were about to leave next morning to camping..

I picked up some Motul 5W40 8100X-cess, a filter and 2 CCV valves from the dealer since it is an easy 10 min job and knew it hasnt been done before;
i was expecting the worse...
Picked up 8 NGK iridium ix too but didnt have time to do them anymore...

as you will see from the pics, they were both shot..
filled her up a little over the full mark by mistake...drove it like that all weekend...but what I noticed is that after 3 min of idling, the car starts to smoke...to the point that its getting really embarrassing and have to turn off the engine...the car did burn 1qt of oil every 2500miles or so on bmw oil..we'll see how it goes with Motul.

my questions are:

1.Does the car start to smoke a lot more in warmer weather ?It hasnt done that when we had 45-60 degree weather...

2.Can new CCV valves accentuate the smoke from the stem seals?

3.Is it possible that the extra oil was burning off and should see improvements in the next few weeks?(im not getting my hopes up on this one)

4.If it is indeed the valve stem seals, how should i approach the dealer on this one?Ive heard stories on this board where someone had his seals replaced at no cost by the bmw dealership..(again, even less chances than winning the lottery but its worth trying)

5.Any other tests that I can do to really narrow it down to the stem seals?dont wanna change them just to find out that the problem persists..

6. How do you guys feel about all that crud on the old ccv's? it doesnt look normal to me..

Here some pictures...

Wow! When was the last time you changed pressure regulator valve? I have never seen them all black like that.

Given the fact that I bought the car 7 months ago, never...and since I have all the records since new, I think they were the original ones to be honest...a lot of hardened crud around them as well...that was my reaction when I took them out...I couldn't believe how dirty they were

I talked to one of the guys at my indy today. The main guy is out on vacation. He said that if the smoke appears on start up after it's been sitting, it's the stem seals. After a few minutes it should go away. Only after sitting or idling a bit to allow enough oil to pass through. Mine is barely noticeable, so I'll bring it in in a few weeks to have the other guy diagnose. I'm new to the blue smoke too

How did all the plugs look?

Notice the difference in the cap design? The new one has hard blocks under the metal tabs to prevent the eventual fatigue of the position, leading to leaks. I just bought a BMW cap and I don't think it had the detents. I'll have to check again later.

Cheers.

I haven't had time to change the plugs I only took one out and had to pack up and go cuz it was already late...I'm planning to change them this weekend

As far as smoking, mine smokes a few minutes after start up...if I step on the acceleration, it smokes like a diesel locomotive..not nice..

Yes about the cap...much better design..mine started to leak so I had to change it...

Well I'll have to check the smoking part again this weekend ..with all that crud inside the engine, I'm not even surprised...but interesting how it got worse after changing the CCV valves

Start plugging the holes (CCV, VCGs, oil cap, etc.) and it has to go somewhere - it'll find the weakest spot. Appears yours was the stem seals. From what you describe, it sounds like it. Does it clear up after you run it for a few minutes and keep it running? I suspect it's not good for the cats either, so it should be addressed. Like I said, mine isn't bad yet, so I'll go in in a few weeks. I'm hitting Watkins for a week with my other car (looks like it's going to piss rain 2 of the 4 days ), then off to San Antonio for a week or two (work).

I'll share whatever I find out - additives, costs, recommendations, etc.

Cheers.
