100k Preventative Maint

Hey guys just curious as to get everyones opinion or your own personal list of 100k preventative maint. This is my first x5 and I want this sucker to last me another 100k because I absolutely LOVE driving this truck. No current major issues going on with it. Only issues I currently have are when cruising around 70mph or so under light coasting acceleration there is a noticeable humming noise that appears to be coming from the left rear wheel. Also noticing when turning or in reverse at slow speeds I can hear a knock coming from one of the front suspension. This only started occurring a couple of days ago. Other than that it appears to be idling a little heavier than it did when I got it but I'm hoping a good ole tune up will fix her right up! I can do most things on my own but any major fixes I will take to my indy shop who does a GREAT job. I just changed the brakes last month on my own with some new cross drilled and slotted rotors and cool carbon pads. Also going to need to take those off again and put anti squeal on them because they have started making that god awful noise only during light braking. Thanks again guys!!!

-Spark plugs
-Coolant
-X-drive T-case fluid
-Front+Rear Diff oil
-Tensioners/belts/pulleys, or wait for them to fail.
-Transmission fluid (if your one of the people that chooses to do so)

-You said your hearing knocking, at 100k regardless your due for a suspension refresh...

-All front balljoint/control arms/stabilizer links etc
Same with rear.

-Check the status of your guibos (flex discs, front+rear driveshafts)

-PS fluid change wouldn't hurt. Also brake fluid if it hasn't been done in a while.

-Check/replace CCV's.

Should be a good list for you to get started on, get workin!

Before doing anything, do an assessment
* figure out your min & max budget - any number is good at this point
* do a very thorough inspection
-scan, quick diag test
- listen for any creaking/cracking/popping,
- rattle/vibration/noise during idle or park or reverse or moderate to spirited test drive
* suspension related
* motor mount
* etc
- oil , refrigerant , coolant, fluid leaks
- etc....
* review your findings (repairs, regular maint and prev maint ) and then prioritize ( High , medium and low )
* compare your initial budget if can accommodate all the high priority items. If, yes do it all. Else figure out your final max budget and the rest you can figure out from here on what's best for your vehicle.

Don't mind me, I'm just going to jump in here to remind me to keep an eye on this thread. I'm in the same boat. Doing round 1 with my indy right now. These types of checklists are great, and I appreciate you guys for posting them...

Have a good one!

Here you go:

On a regular basis:

> Rotate tires, inspect pads & Rotors, CV boots, general lookover every 5000 miles
> Oil / Filter change every 8000 miles (or every 6 months)
> Brake fluid flush every 30,000 miles (or every three years)
> Replace belts and clean CCV every 100,000 miles (or every 4 years - maybe more on the CCV up north)
> Replace differential and transfer case fluid every 100,000 miles
> Replace sparkplugs every 120,000 miles
> Replace expansion tank, coolant and hoses every 150,000 miles (or six years)
> Replace bake pads every 163,000 miles (Akebono ceramics)
> Replace rotors??? (192,000 miles on current Brembos)

My unplanned repairs have included:

> Front axles at 60,000 miles (Prior owner didn't maintain CV boots)
> FSR at 78,000 miles
> Two sparkplug coils at 124,000 miles
> Alternator at 126,000 miles
> Front driveshaft at 136,000 (used a salvage transfer case for cost savings)
> FSR (again) at 159,000 miles
> Thermostat at 176,000 miles
> Rear differential seal at 200,000 miles
> Secondary air pump at 224,000 miles
> Thermostat (again) at 245,000 miles - at least it was warranty this time
> Steering column double U-Joint shaft at 245,000 miles
> Valve cover gasket at 245,000 miles
> Both fuel tank sending units, fuel pump and canister at 245,000 miles
> Aux fan when the harness got chewed up in the mechanical fan and shorted out at 259,000 miles
> Pre-cat O2 sensors at 260,400 miles

The "Expected" replacements have been:

> All four window regulators
> Driver door handle carrier
> Front axle outer CV boots (each side one time)
> Front tension struts
> Rear suspension bushings and ball joints at 252,000 miles

All in all, except for the stupid front driveshaft job that cost $4200, I have really been happy with the vehicle. It doesn't get babied, but I do monitor and maintain it. I think a lot of my good fortune is due to four things: I live in Texas with short winters so I don't have a lot of the CCV condensation problems, my daily commute is 60 miles so the engine oil always reaches full operating temperature, I run the "M" series viscosity engine oil from May through September when I my driving includes 3000 miles of towing a 1400 pound Waverunner and trailer, and I stick with Shell gasoline. And note- the transmission fluid has never been changed.

These are just FYI like srmmm gave.
It does "NOT" mean all of these can happen to the OP vehicle.

Everything else are preventive maintenance ( 10 yrs and only 85k miles), except for these repairs (out pocket)
- cv boot
- trunk lid grip
- gm3 body module
- hoop shocks
- hood alarm sensor
- rear ball joint
- power steering suction hose
- power steering hose to intercooler
- VCG
- FSR
- door carrier ( front driver)
- misc bulbs and angel eyes

Pardon my ignorance but I've been seeing a lot about this CV boot. What is that exactly and what does it do? Also this suspension issue is starting to annoy me. Looks like it will be first on the list. Mostly in reverse and the occasional forward when turning the suspension pops. What's the normal culprit of causing this? Again guys thank you so much for all of your help! I am wanting to do the majority of repairs myself that I can. This is my first BMW but it looks like I'll be an x5 driver from here on out!
