Man I thought the E53's had problems

I was thinking of buying a X6 M this year.

I was searching the other models and found this...seems BMW is going to have lots of problems with this campaign and there V-8's for a long time to come.

X5 N63 engine recall (Service Bulletin B001314)

at least BMW HQ acknowledged and covers it (labor & parts) even for out of warranty vehicles. The question is how long this program last owners needs to take advantage!

I have been fortunate to be a beneficiary of a few BMW NA approved good will programs for our vehicles.

This recall is a HUGE deal. It tells me they cant engineer engines very well anymore. The reliable BMW's of the 70's and 80's are gone when people retire. The next gen of engineers are scary.

BMW lost me on the new Chris Bangle 7 series that was a disaster.

The fact that how many of these will be used cars that will be bought as a lemon well after the good will has run out. IE my door handle carriers that are a known issue broke and BMW told me it's "to old" and they wont warrantee it. I can go on and on but this will be another one of those for some poor fool years from now.

I'm going to still stay away from new BMW's.

It's a free world.... Choose your future direction....

All Car/SUV/VAN manufacturers have their own share of major recalls.

I am here to debate BMW is the worst or the lesser evil.

Recalls happen. Not all of the engines from the 70's and 80's were that great either. Either BMW will engine a fix or the enthusiasts will and life goes on.

I googled for information concerning the bulletin. I found this 'recall' originated from a forum rather than a confirmed BMW source. Reading through links and reading the posts it does sound like it could be legitimate.

Some posts read that the list of items are to be checked to see if they need to be replaced or updated to new designs rather than any or all the items are to be replaced. If there were any, it was very few that mentioned that they had experienced prematurely failing of the parts to be checked. I can't draw the conclusion that the upgrade program means that the trade-ins won't be checked before put on the market.

The reduction of oil change interval makes sense. My guess it is because of the heat generated by the turbos.

I didn't find anyone that mentioned they had received a letter from BMW requesting them to bring in their BMW. I don't recall any press on this 'bulletin' like the recent recalls of other manufactures. Seems suspicious but the benefit of the doubt would be that is yet to come.

I also read that this is marketing program to show that BMW cares about it's customers. IMO, if a BMW marketing program, it is certain to be interpreted by those unhappy with their BMW experience to endorse their position that BMWs are not reliable or are poor quality. If it is a marketing program that could also explain the upgrade portion as a see more new vehicles opportunity.

On December 29th, 2014, BMW released Bulletin "B001314" or the "N63 Customer Care Package " affecting any vehicle that saw use of the 4.4-liter V-8 (N63B44O0) within the 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, X5, and X6 model lines manufactured between 2008 and 2013.

Dealership instructions include checking the timing chain for stretching and replacing it if necessary, replacing the fuel injectors, mass air flow sensors, crankcase vent lines, battery, engine vacuum pump and low pressure fuel sensor.

I couldn't find a confirmed bulletin from BMW. I did find the forums referenced that as being the number. Do you have a link?
