There was always the potential of residual heat harming the oil with the way the turbos are positioned. What is good to see is that BMW is dealing with it, with a no-cost program for out-of-warranty vehicles. I had a similar experience with an early HPFP in a 535i. I waited a year for them to get the bugs out after it debuted, but mine still had a problem. They replaced the high pressure fuel pump under warranty when I had a failure, no issues. Didn't have another problem, but they wrote to me and said that they were giving me a 10 year warranty on the fuel injection system. Later, they wrote again and said they now had a new supplier, and wanted to replace the HPFP again at my convenience. They did that, and it was fine again. I'll buy another new BMW. That said, I will always buy a six cylinder (or possibly another four cylinder) over a V8. Just a more elegant engine. They do appear to have addressed the root cause, since the latest version of the N63 isn't included in the bulletin, and the F15 which uses the latest version isn't in scope.

Every and that's all manufacturers recall most of their cars at some point, fact, its not that that makes them a bad or unreliable car its the way that they deal with the problem, some say you get one chance to bring it in for repairs and if you don't and the recall expires its tuff shit others will track down the owner keep on until its fixed and sometimes even offer the recall years down the line. I work for fiat and kia and kia will replace crankshafts on kia picantos that aren't worth the expense because they realise its their mistake and fix it for free, fiat how ether is a different story. bmw seem to be very good when it comes to fixing their mistakes or unforeseen failures.

it's not a recall so much as good it good will from bmw, I see these cars everyday, the ones that get driven and get up to temp never have an issue, the v8's that put around town and never get up to temp have carbon issues, same as every other direct injection engine, vw, audi, mercedes, caddy, are no different. You don't have fuel washing over the valves to keep them clean any more so carbon builds up. bmw stepped up where other manufacterers told people to pound sand and the cars out of warranty...
