Transfer Case or Transmission 2005 E53 N62??
I have a 2005 X5 4.4 and recently started to feel a shuddering or a missed gear /spline when driving . This continues from 1st to 4th gear up until about 80 KPH speed and then smooths out. It is difficult to describe but the closest I can describe it is akin to a stripped spline /gear. It is almost as if the transmission is slipping or the transfer case . I have pulled the plastic gear from the actuator motor on the transfer case and checked it ( looks good with no sign of wear), changed the transmission oil 50K Km ago ( preventive) and again last week (no sign of wear/sludge). I have access to INPA and DIS and the car shows no codes. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Where is the shake? Wheel? Floor? Shifter?
I'm having a new transfer case put in right now. Had a shake right from front inside door handle straight across to the other. Felt it in my thighs and when it really got going it showed up in the wheel.

Update -- Problem Fixed ...TRansfer Case Oil
Drain and refill Transfer Case with New oil... Old oil after 50k KM was very dark. Reset Transfer Case Oil setting for new oil using DIS ( very important ) and then drive for 100 KM in varying conditions (in traffic and on Highway ) so Transfer case can adapt the clutches . After I first changed the tranfer case oil and took it for a drive , problem of slipping/ shudder was still there but not as bad as before. After driving for 100 KM car now back to normal... Hope this helps someone. I also checked my actuator gear also but it looked fine and the OD measured the same after 8 measurement in different spot, sit.o I did not change

Hi davewlee:
I am experiencing kind of similar thing with my '04 X5 4.4i (between 30~40 MPH). Did you do the work yourself or got it done at a mechanic? Is there a DIY for it that one can follow? Thanks for any information that you can provide. |

Did it At Home
Open Transfer case fill Plug before you remove drain plug to be sure you can refill the transfer case. The reset procedure is IMPORTANT. and as far as I know can only be done with DIS software. You need the correct Transfer fluid also. About $40 per litre but you only need 1 .

From my reading the T-case is made by New Venture, so I assume you are using only the BMW oil? Anyone aware of the specs or substitutions? Just curious, I'm new to BMW cars, but have a lot of experience with BMW motorcycles.

Also, you only need a liter, just get the BMW oil.

You're right AFAIK I have the New Venture, like I said. My post wasn't really response per se, I was asking a question rather than clogging up the bandwidth with a new thread or dredging up a dead thread. Sorry, if that's bad form. ![]() As to which oil. I try to do my own work, so I know the vehicle and what it's doing. If we have to go to the dealer and pay $60 per liter, then it is what it is. However, if you can buy the same oil in a different container from Auto Zone for $10 per liter, then that's way I prefer to go. For example: the Castrol SAF-XO used in the differentials is sold commercially in the US as Syntec and available in many different retail settings for far less money than dealer costs. I found this out because this is same oil used/recommended in their motorcycles, of which I own. Simple as that. If there is a reference for substitute fluids, like I mentioned above, then I missed it and I apologize.

As for the oil, I am by no means an expert, but I've also just had my transfer case replaced. From the research I've done, it seems there are plenty of non BMW oils that claim 'compatibility', but those who've done the in-depth research find that as marketing-speak, and the actual makeup of the oil is not an equivalent of the BMW oil, thus not recommended. I did NOT come up with any specific proven examples of anyone who fried their transfer case using non-BMW oil, but I'm sure there's someone out there who thinks they did. I would rather not be the first, so I used BMW oil.
