Cuban....my thoughts. If it was a bad trans it would slip,,,bang in gear and so on that is typical on a worn trans.

It's most likely something electrical.

When you bring it in to the dealer you tell them...... "At 2,000 rpms the "Trans Fail Prong" warning comes on and it goes to limp mode. If I shut the engine off the message is gone and it runs fine again until I go over 2,000 rpms. "

When you bring it to the dealer ask for the shop forman to work on it...you need the best tech in the shop diagnose it. You can bring it to 3 different BMW shops and you will get different diagnoses.

It might be a good idea to change the speed sensor like up all night suggested...he suggested it might be out of synch, may that entail using a computer to reset it..don't know. BMW E53 X5 M62 4.4L Search SiteSearch Speed Sensor - 24341218551 - Speed Sensor - ES#45540

Could be items 6 (there are two)

http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E39-540.../ES24/ES45540/

The cost for the two sensors, plus a new filter and gasket, plus ATF plus labor will put this repair between $500 to $2000 depending if you DIY or BII (Bring It In).

No Guarantee that this will fix the problem.

What do you mean that the truck won't even starts? It crank but it doesn't start, or doesn't even crank?

If it doesn't even crank, you have a dead battery and perhaps the alternator has crapped out and doesn't maintain the battery charge so you have a low voltage situation. Low voltage can trigger a "Trans Fail" message.

Where are you getting it rebuilt? Mine is ok now, but I'd like to have a good shop queued up in case I get into issues some day.
