Good theory. Im not experiencing any lifter noise. The motor sounds and runs smooth. The only time it runs bad is when I have a misfire and that injector is cut off. I have to pull over and restart the motor.

Fuel milage has also dropped sine the start of these problems.

Haven't been able to spend much time on the car since the holidays. Hopefully soon things will let up and I can get back to trying to fix it.
Went and looked at some used Suburbans thinking of trading the X5 in. All the Suburbans had issues as well. Cant get away from car problems.

SarTech:

My lifters are not making any noise either... just a theory...

My mileage seems to be fairly consistent, although ambient temps really seem to have a large effect on the mileage. Since I have 3.73 gears (OEM was 4.11) in my X5 will get about 23 MPG in the summer, and about 20 MPG in the winter.

My misfire issue occurs under very little throttle while cruising on the highway. I've been getting very good at finding a good spot while rolling to push in the clutch, shut off the ignition, restart, and continue rolling. Only issue is a night on the highway - all the lights go out when turning off the engine!!

FWIW - I got rid of a Yukon XL for the X5, simply since I didn't need the space or the lower MPG's. But the Yukon was always good to me, never had major issues (except for having to replace all the brake lines due to the magnesium chloride they started spraying on the roads in winter here).

another update... a big one... but no resolution to the issue!!!

Replaced all tappets and buckets. In doing so, pulled the head to change the cylinder head gasket while we were that far into the engine. Rebuilt the VANOS as well...

Truck still has the same misfire issue.. same codes as prior... pulling hair out!

Getting very, very close to scrapping the truck and finding something else to drive.

Oh my!
Sorry to hear. I fell you pain.
I, also have not made any headway.
I have noted something different. In December I drove the car down to Eugene OR. about 7 hours away. Since that time I have noted less misfires. Im wondering if there is a buildup of carbon one the piston rings, that long hard drive may of loosen some of the ring sticking. Something for sure has changed. Still having misfires, but less.

SarTech, apologies if I've missed this info somewhere in the thread: Is it a petrol or a diesel engine you have?

Ok, I've asked a friend who works at volvo (15+years) as mechanic and he told me that he used to get a lot of cop cars in with the same symptoms as yours...the remedy was to basically change spark plugs and O2 sensor, and just check that all other stuff are ok (ignition coils, leads etc). Then take the car out for a very hard run...accelerate hard on as many gears as the road allows basically. This clears the buildup of all the carbon (swedish police are cruisers and rarely push the cars) which causes misfires etc. Also, you can actually see the the amount of carbon coming out when doing so.

It might sound unorthodox and sure it's not bmw but he has been successful every time with Audi, volvo and Saab.

Hate to revive this old thread, but like so many other similar ones it there is no indication whether the issue was ever resolved.

So SarTech, did you ever resolve your problem? Or did you get rid of your X5?

I have similar issues to the ones you described, and I'm looking for guidance.

Try switching to a good grade fuel... after all the $hit I did with my X5, a freak twist of fate seems to have solved my issue. I was using Gulf 92 octane fuel with no ethanol added for over a year. I trusted the gas station, no reason to beleive it was poor fuel. One day, I had no choice but to put in a tank of Sunoco Ultra 93 octane (with ethanol). Within 100 miles, the issue subsided. Since then, Sunoco fuel only, and the misfire issue has not re-occurred!

No clue why, but it resolved my issue for now.... worth a try!

I can help you here. If you pull a fuel sample at the fuel rail and place it in a glass container (SEE MOTOR SERVICE MAGAZINE FOR REAL LIFE EXAMPLES and test procedures), you will discover that water and ethanol mix is way beyond the ability to burn cleanly. ADD injector cleaner/dry gas additive to 1/2 tank, repeat until gone....Or drain tank. Most of us pick up water and poor fuel mixes from stations with low volumes or "discount stations". Real life issue all over the USA especially in the colder areas due to seasonal fuel change overs.
