Vacuum Pump Seals Removal & Installation‏ DIY

Had an oil leak from the vacuum pump on my X5 2005 (N62 engine). Replaced the two pump seals. Got the seal kit from bmpdesign.com for only $17. Dealer sells only the seal between the pump and timing cover. The leak is usually from the pump cover itself rather than between pump and timing case. No use to replace the entire pump if the pump cover is leaking.

BmpDesign.com have an excellent DIY for the repair on their website.

Here's a link to the DIY to the brake booster vacuum pump seals removal & installation‏

I picked up their seal kit off eBay last summer from a 3rd party seller. I believe they want quite a bit to ship it though if you buy from them.

There was a guy here on the forum who wasn't pleased with that arrangement and measured the pump cover seal and bought a bunch of them from McMaster Carr. I'd have to dig up the thread, but I recall him suggesting it's really quite inexpensive.

Yeah, their shipping costs are high ($13 for 3 days delivery) for such light weight items. Oh well, the order is already placed.

If you call them, they will charge you less for shipping. I just got off the phone with them and mine was shipped for $7 USPS priority. The shipping calculator is sometimes off. The sales rep lady that I talked to said if you go to check out and shipping seems high, you can call them or email them and they can check into it. Just an FYI!

Thanks for letting us know. The oil leak is now fixed - bone-dry thus far. Actually one can only replace the cover seal if that's all that's leaking. No need to remove the pump itself to do this. Easy as 1...2...3
